We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Destiny Basnight a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Destiny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Modeling, acting and music have been my dream since I was small child. I always loved to entertain and put on a show. When life was hard , it was amazing to escape into my art, become some one else or put my hurt in my music , my testimony. The Stage feels like home but I’ve grown a passion for film. Here in Indianapolis just 2 years back I finally connected with a promising group of actors called the cre8tors. Working with writer and director Eric Washington, I’ve been in about four stage plays and I’m currently working on two film projects. Which helps sharpen my acting skills and land me a role in a film film called out the gate written and directed by Jm and Benjamin. I’ve done some extra background work on the popular TV show the Chi.
Being a single ,mother of three it’s challenging juggling home life as well as pursuing dream career. My daughters are all extremely supportive and admire my hard work and dedication to my craft. I may not be where I want to be in this industry but I’ve come so far and I know that God is not done with me yet. At the close of my career I plan to educate in the arts musically acting provide financial aid for other struggling artists, create my own school for performing arts. I live eat and breathe my art and if I could do this into the day that God calls me home I would with the biggest smile on my face. I love it so much often times I’ve accepted gives gigs where there was no financial compensation. Simply because I know that the experience is worth it.

Destiny, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well I go by Destiny I’m from Chicago Illinois originally currently residing in Indianapolis Indiana. I grew up in a household of musically inclined individuals and a Christian background so I was immediately in church choir and after school programs for drama. On all social media platforms I go by ItsYourDestinyTv, I came up with that concept because I feel my content and what I create is meant for you to see I’ve always been told I needed my own TV show so it just went hand in hand. I’ve always been a talkative child so growing up I was always elaborating a story or being the most dramatic out of my group or talking a hole in my grandmother and my great grandmother’s head. I used to talk so much my great-grandmother used to pay me to be quiet. I’m a free spirit a kind soul and a motivator! I’m a people person but I love my peace as well. I use meditation and prayer just pretty much help me balance everything in this industry as well as home life and motherhood. I’m currently working on some new music but I do have some songs out on SoundCloud one song is entitled glow in the other song is make it thru. My sound is Gospel inspirational motivational. I put my heart into everything I do very passionate, my gifts were given to me naturally any day I just try to give God thanks for who he’s made me and what he’s brought me through.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is to do what I love and remain authentic to myself not allow the industry or outside opinion change who I’ve been called to be.
My daughters mean the world to me so I plan to build an empire for them and leave a legacy that even their grandchildren can reap the benefits from.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’d say in this industry the lesson I’ve had to learn the most is not to trust everyone I can be naive about collaborating and connecting with people.
Because this is my dream and I would like to live in it I assume that everyone has the same right heart in mind as I do I’ve met a lot of wolves and sheep clothing throughout this Journey that has at some time stopped me from doing what it is that I love to do which is creating, laughing smiling taking photos making songs.
I had to learn to continue to push for me even when it feels like those closest to me don’t support my dreams.
I’m more cautious I’m more careful I pray before I accept opportunities . I feel as though at the end of the day what God has for me is for me so I’ve also learned when an audition is declined or a role is rejected or studio time is canceled it’s for a reason not for me to give up what it is that I’m doing but for me to be patient on my path.
