We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Destini Stacy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Destini, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
All of my work is meaningful to me, but with each release I grow deeper into myself as a creative and I become more and more comfortable being truly vulnerable. With that in mind, I’d have to say the project I am working on now is the most meaningful to me. It is finally coming together after I took over a year to just live and create for myself in private. In the time since my last project I have grown through s0 much. I lost what felt like everything , and got it all back. I lost friends , and then made better ones. I’ve grieved and conquered and rediscovered myself and my sound. To me, this project feels like forgiveness and stability, and peace.. and there are few things more meaningful than those concepts.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I tend to identify mostly as a singer and songwriter , but I’m learning to give myself credit where due, and I’m so much more than that. I’m a creative and I create. I’ve begun crocheting a lot of my looks for my content, I sing, I write I dance, and more. Through the arts and through movement, I hope to offer my supporters understanding and a safe space for them to process their human experiences. I hope that after hearing my song or wearing something made by me or attending a yoga session with me that my supporters feel heard, seen and deserving, regardless of their situation. I think what sets me apart from others is my desire to be felt over being seen. I’m not pressed about being in the lime light, I really just wanna fulfill my purpose and keep it moving. I’m most proud of how I’ve learned to deal with fear. Sometimes you have to do it afraid, and I’m proud of myself for jumping head first into my art every time , no matter how terrifying that feels.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I recently had to totally start over in regards to my music. I used to have a terrible tendency of dating my producers lol. I’m a hopeless romantic, and I would get so lost in love that it became difficult to separate the romantic aspects of our relationship from the business aspect. I was so enamored by my relationship, I really cut myself off from working with other producers. I also never took time to learn how to engineer myself because he did that and I’d record in his studio so I never brought my own professional studio equipment. We of course came to an end, as most things do and I had no idea where to start in taking on music by myself for the first time. It took time, consistency and determination, but I’ve since figured out what my sound is outside of him, I’ve brought the necessary technology and learned how to record myself, and made connections that don’t come with stipulations. I could have called it quits, or found someone else to depend on and I’m sure there are people who didn’t expect me to recover. Maneuvering through this journey truly independent really demonstrates my resilience, and I feel proud.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding part of being an artist is the opportunity to create a space where myself and my supporters can dress how we want, self reflect, say how we truly feel and allow our shadows to dance hand in hand with our light without shame.
