We recently connected with Destini Jackson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Destini, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
There are times that I wish that I had started my business while my parents were living so that they could celebrate my success with me and also witness the love and appreciation that people have for our family recipes. However, all things happen in God’s perfect timing and I believe that my business started at the right time and deep down in my heart I know that they are proud and their legacy will continue to live through me. Hence the name, Legacy Sweets.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Destini Jackson and I’m the owner of Legacy Sweets. I’m an in-home baker servicing the Tampa Bay area. I specialize in baking custom cakes, cupcakes, cheesecakes, cookies and brownies. I began as a hobby baker and would only bake during the holidays. On the one year anniversary of my mother’s passing I decided to take a leap of faith and turn my hobby into a business. It is such an honor and privilege to carry on family traditions and I take pride in preserving my family’s legacy as a baker. I have family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation and I truly enjoy the smile that graces a customer’s face when they experience Legacy Sweets for the first time.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been through local pop up events and markets. It has allowed customers to get to know me as a baker and sample some of my desserts before placing custom orders. These events have also provided me with the opportunity to network with other vendors who have also become repeat customers of mine.
What’s a lesson that you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
“Saying yes to every opportunity.” As a new business owner, I believed that I had to accept every opportunity that was presented to me in order to grow and be successful in the baking business. I quickly learned that just because it’s a good opportunity, doesn’t mean that it is good for me. I had to learn when to say no and understand why it is critical for my success.
