We recently connected with Destiney Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Destiney, appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I’m happy as a business owner, sometimes it easier to say that but I do feel like in “general” I’m happy. It’s tough staying that way though. I often think how much easier life would be if I can go back to having a regular job, I actually left a pretty rewarding career to do this, it had its perks, consistent pay, set hours, lunch breaks, vacation, sick leave… I could call off . I don’t have those luxuries right now as a business owner. My business needs me practically everyday, sometimes for 60+ hours a week. So it gets discouraging… the public doesn’t make it any better. I’ve never been treated so poorly until I opened a Brick and Mortar business. So that definitely makes me think about when things were simpler for me and my name/reputation wasn’t tied to my business. What keeps me going are the customers that look forward to booking us for every event, or the kids that think the store is the coolest place ever, the families that come see us everyday after school.
Can you tell us about something you’ve accomplished as a business owner that the public may not have been aware of?
I’m most proud of my growth. I look back at the 1st year or so I was making cakes and I can’t believe that I actually saw potential in myself back then..lol they are kinda cringey. 5ish years later I’m flabbergasted on how far I’ve come, my team have come with our designs, our cakes are becoming more and more elaborate, show stopping and jaw dropping and I can’t wait to see us in another 5 years
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social Media, Mostly Facebook and Instagram has been crucial for my store to gain new customers. Constant content has definitely grown our follower base and it keeps people walking in the door.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is that STRANGERS believe in you. I can’t tell you how many people come in to order a cake and say ” I’ve seen your work, I trust you” and give me creative freedom to make thier cake (within the theme of course) and that just is an amazing feeling
