We recently connected with Destinee Winger and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Destinee, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I currently manage all of my own social media for Desserts by Desss. I chose to do it myself because I truly understand my brand voice, my audience, and the level of creativity and personal touch I want each post to reflect. Social media plays a huge role in how I connect with my customers, whether it’s showcasing custom orders, announcing policy updates, or sharing behind-the-scenes content.
So far, the results have been very rewarding. It allows me to build genuine relationships with my audience, respond quickly to inquiries, and stay on top of trends in real-time. I’ve also found that my followers engage more when the content feels personal and authentic, especially when it shows the love and detail I put into every order.
One big lesson I’ve learned is the importance of planning ahead. Even though I manage it myself, I try to stay organized by batching content, using templates, and keeping a calendar for promotions or seasonal offerings. It helps reduce stress and keeps my feed consistent.
If you’re a small business owner thinking about social media, start by doing it yourself, at least in the beginning. It teaches you a lot about your audience and brand identity. Later on, if you decide to hire help, you’ll be better equipped to guide them and maintain the quality and voice of your business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! I’m the owner and creator behind Desserts by Desss, a one-woman dessert brand where every treat is made with creativity, intention, and love.
Funny enough, I actually started off cooking and selling dinners, but something about that just wasn’t fulfilling for me. I felt like it didn’t give me the space to express my creative side. That’s when I started experimenting with desserts, and everything just clicked. I instantly fell in love with the design process, from color palettes and themes to edible images and custom details, and realized this was the lane I was meant to be in.
Now, Desserts by Desss specializes in custom treats for all occasions, cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, cake pops, rice krispy treats, and more. I also offer edible printing, which means I can bring logos, characters, or even personal photos to life right on your dessert. Whether it’s a baby shower, birthday, or brand launch, I help turn your vision into edible art.
What sets my brand apart is the attention to detail and the full customization. I’m not a “one-style-fits-all” baker. I work closely with each customer to make sure the treats match the vibe and vision of your event, down to the colors, designs, and packaging. And since it’s just me behind the scenes, I personally handle every order from start to finish.
What I’m most proud of is building this from the ground up. I didn’t go to culinary school, I learned through passion, trial, and a whole lot of practice. Now, I’ve turned a simple idea into a full business that’s grown through word-of-mouth, repeat clients, and loyal followers who support my work.
If you’re new here, I want you to know: when you order from Desserts by Desss, you’re getting more than just sweets, you’re getting a personalized experience, professional service, and treats that will be remembered long after the event is over.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with my clients by being very hands-on and personal with communication. Whether it’s through direct messages on social media, follow-up texts, or updates via email or Square, I make sure my clients feel seen and heard every step of the way. I don’t just take an order and disappear, I stay connected from the moment they inquire to the moment they pick up their treats (and even after).
To foster brand loyalty, I focus on consistency, professionalism, and attention to detail. I make sure every order is delivered on time, beautifully made, and matches exactly what the client envisioned. I also use small touches like thank-you notes, sneak peeks of their treats before pickup, or early access to seasonal specials to make them feel appreciated.
Most importantly, I treat every customer like a VIP, whether it’s their first order or their fifth. I remember their preferences, listen to feedback, and take the time to build real relationships. That’s what keeps people coming back.
At the end of the day, I’ve found that good communication + great product = loyal clients. And that’s always my goal with Desserts by Desss.
Any advice for managing a team?
Right now, I run Desserts by Desss mostly on my own, but I’m definitely not doing it completely alone. I’m so grateful to have a small support system that makes a big difference. My mom, sister, and boyfriend help me out a lot, whether it’s making deliveries, helping with setups for events, or just being there when things get hectic. Their help means everything to me, especially during busy weekends or large custom orders.
Even though I don’t have a full team yet, I’ve learned how important it is to have people around you who support your vision. We work together with a shared goal: making sure every customer gets exactly what they ordered, on time and beautifully done. And we do it with good energy, patience, and teamwork.
When it comes to advice about managing a team and maintaining high morale, I’d say this: treat the people helping you like they’re part of your brand, because they are. Communicate clearly, show appreciation, and don’t forget to celebrate the wins together. The vibe behind the scenes really does reflect in your work.
So even though Desserts by Desss is still growing, I’ve learned firsthand how much a solid, supportive circle can help a business shine.
