We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Destinee Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Destinee, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Being an artist/creative is one of the most liberating feelings in my humble opinion. I feel as though being an artist is another form of saying “Being Yourself”. To be an artist or creative requires a certain level of self acceptance & alignment with self. Despite having a regular job for survival & to support whatever lifestyle I choose to live, it’s also reassuring to know that one day my dreams & passions will be able to sustain me. I think that’s pretty humbling because I know that one day I’ll look back and reflect on what life was like when I had a regular job. Art is really just life. Life is art. As an artist, it brings me joy to pull things from my mind and creatively express in whatever way may be unique to me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
While acting is dear to my heart, I feel as though there’s many many sides to me and the talents I choose to pursue in life. I enjoy being a creator, a business woman full of ideas that I’m going to bring to life. I dip and dabble in so many creative endeavors that it’s hard to box myself in. Sometimes I never take time to celebrate my accomplishments. It’s like I’m just ready for the next goal, and the next one, and so on. Though, as I’m about to turn 25 on August 28, I can’t help but think about how proud of myself I am. There’s things I’ve wanted to accomplish and with Gods grace I have accomplished them. Of course there is a long way to go but I’m learning to stop & smell the roses. As I get older and wiser, I’m making sure I live life on my own terms, following my dreams and passions all the way through. Excited to share my creations with the world in the future.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
It’s easier for creatives to understand other creatives. That’s not to say non-creatives are alienated or anything, it’s just we view the world from two different vantage points. As a creative we value expression, art, and freedom. That’s a perfect recipe for a creative to make fireworks. Sometimes it’s harder for non-creatives to truly understand the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of a creative. We can be seen as weird, distant, hard to understand etc but really it’s all in the art. There’s a saying, “Art is vulnerable”. The inspirations from life, the lessons, the good, the bad, the highs, the lows, it all goes into….the art.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist? The final product of your creation. Whether that be writing, filming, etc, finally seeing your creation come to life is a blissful feeling. Physically seeing it when there was a point in life where it was only in your mind, is something unexplainable. Being able to finish something is a big deal because it’s easy to start, but to finish takes lots of perseverance, determination, and ambition. More importantly, when those you love support you, that is a very underrated reward as being an artist.
