Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Destin Andrews. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Destin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
I was always the shy, soft spoken artist drawing in high school but was to shy and insecure to really show off my work . Once i got my first creative job as a caricature artist my junior year, the biggest lesson I learned was that no matter how skilled you are or talented you are, you have to be able to sell yourself and promote yourself with confidents because my first day at a booth with two other artist. I was sitting at my easel just doing some practice sketches, and i noticed the other 2 artist standing up talking to people as they walk by eventually getting customers to sit in there chair to purchase a drawing. meanwhile they have sales but i have zero. so eventually over time with the help of my first mentor i became more confident to actually speak to customers confidently and learn more hustle skills and learned that people want to buy my work but you have to be noticed. as a artists or any profession biggest lesson i learned from that is there will be people less talented, less qualified, less skillful then you, but will accomplish more just because they are willing to put there self out there and take the more risk then you.
Destin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Destin Andrews I also go by Desto/Desto Arts. I am a professional illustrator and Caricature Artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. I’ve done tons of logos for small businesses, book illustrations, album/music cover, posters, portraits, paintings, etc. I also do live caricature drawings at, birthday party’s, weddings, events and more. I really enjoy bringing peoples ideas they have to life with any project that they may have and as a Caricature Artist there’s no doubt that at any event people really enjoy the unique experience of getting there picture drawn in less then 5 minutes and have something memorable to take home and as a event planner I’m sure they are really happy when people come up to them saying that a Caricature artist was the best idea ever because i believe that it is unique, memorable, quick , fun, and rare to have a caricature artist. What I’m most proud of is that overtime for seven years as artist I’ve have grown and have had a lot of great opportunities to showcase my work and build my clientele as an illustrator and still growing today. My goal as a artist is to continue growing my brand and become the best artist i can be to bring more creativity to the world. One day hosting exhibitions that are unique and interactive. build a community of artist in a unique way that will provide endless opportunities for great artist to be seen and more.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
the most rewarding aspect as a creative is knowing i have the freedom to create or bring anything to life that i feel or desire and that as a creative it makes my life a lot more enjoyable.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
YES! Especially the older generation. College is not the only way to see success as an artist. Its very simple. Its mostly about who you know more than what you know. Yes college is a path that you can take but no matter if you go to college or not you just need a plan and take full advantage of your resources and social media.
