We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Desteni Dominick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Desteni , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Showing clients you appreciate them is something I think most folks want to do – but it’s not always clear how to do it in a meaningful way. What’s one of the best examples of client appreciation you can share with us?
I was working at a spa back in 2021 and my client hadn’t been to me because she became a new mommy and she said she needed to come for a facial but really just needed to relax. She called and said her sitter had cancelled last minute but I assured her it was okay to bring her baby with her. I’m also a mom so I understand where her stress level and mental stability was in that moment. She came and we got started with her facial and baby started getting upset so she tried to feed him and settle him but he was not having it at all. Now I have a background I early childhood development I worked at a daycare and I’ve been a nanny for about years so I asked mom if I was okay if I held him, she said it was okay so I started to feed him & comfort him and he calmed down and we got back to the facial. He got upset again but by that time we were on the mask step & she was now asleep. I applied the mask as picked him up while she slept and sat with him cuddling while the mask did it’s magic. He fell asleep right before it was time to take the mask off so I payed him back down and finished out moms facial. When I woke her up she was surprised he was asleep and that I let her sleep and did her facial. I told her I’ve had one of these days and I was just happy that you got to relax, sleep & be serviced. I love being able to be there for my clients in their time of need whether it’s for a Facial because their skin is working against them, to relax, to be listening ear or to simply just joke around with because they need a laugh. Me becoming a licensed esthetician helps me live in the moment and help others and I enjoy it!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I always wanted to be in the beauty since High school in cosmetology class. I was always in the bathroom doing my hair, applying products to my skin, mixing my own skincare products with different things I’d find in my moms bathroom. I was a hairstylist assistant in 2018 and decided to stop wasting time & figure out what I want to do in the beauty industry and I knew it wasn’t hair. I became a Lash tech in 2019 and quickly found out I needed to be a Licensed Esthetician to be considered a professional Lash Tech. So I went to school to become a Licensed Esthetician in 2020.
I found that I enjoyed Facials & Body Sculpting and decided to build my services around what I got Certified in which is Body Sculpting which is Non-invasive & Advanced Facials such as Micro-needling, Dermaplane, HydraFacials and created Pure Lotus Skin.
I aim to help my clients feel confident in their natural skin and give results. I think what sets me apart is that I treat my client to their own individual needs and listen every time. They know they have a listening ear with an understanding mind and they also know they can get a nap in if they need it to from receiving a relaxing treatment.
I am proud of myself for never giving up and loving my vision & dream enough to go for it and keep going. Know that this is just the beginning and I’m going to keep going, growing and flourishing with my brand and I plan to do big things are coming in the near future and I know your all going to love what I have in store next!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I became a Licensed Esthetician it wasn’t an easy transition. My business was Lashing and now I do Skincare Services. Most people don’t pay close attention to their skin or even know where to start when needing to get facials and an home skincare routine that would ultimately help balance their skin and get the results they want. And of course things that happen behind the scenes personally that kept happening so I wasn’t able to focus on Pure Lotus Skin. I even broke my ankle roller skating.
But I didn’t let anything get me down. I was patient, consistent & optimist about getting back on track with my business because I know that God didn’t put these thoughts and dreams in me if I wasn’t supposed to do it. So I got back on my feet started a new game plan and I’ve been checking off things on my game plan ever since.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I’ve been a nanny for about 7 years now and me being a nanny and smart with my money has given me the opportunity to fund my business. I enjoy being a nanny and the family that I nanny for fully supports me and my goals and I couldn’t be more grateful to be in my position to be able to fund my own business by having a good income.
