We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dessiree Oberhaus. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dessiree below.
Alright, Dessiree thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
The goal of this salon is to make an impact in that of the lives of our guests and staff. We began trouble shooting what staff and guests desire in today’s market and based our fundamentals on that information. Once we had a clear vision of what we wanted and what it would take to get started we started working on our business plan, and began shopping locations. It was important for me to remain in my area, and I really wanted to serve the town of Land O Lakes. So we were thrilled to find a perfect little salon for sale and within a few weeks, made it our own. It all came together really fast. Friends and family stepped in to help here and there and the guest support through the transition was amazing! Now we’re about to celebrate our first year and it’s been wonderful watching the space, and our staff grow.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The mission of the Hive Salon & Boutique is “To empower our guests, staff, and community through education & positive experiences. To care for both the inner and outer beauty of those we service.”
So we put a lot of emphasis on guest experience and providing our guests with the tools they need to create their own looks and properly care for their hair and skin at home. We don’t double book appointments so that each guest gets the undivided attention they deserve.
We also strive for happy staff. In my experience, most stylists leave salons when they don’t feel supported, challenged, and confident. So we also have standards of education, in-house and brand resourced education, quality of work/life balance, and clear expectations in place for a consistent and healthy work environment.
We also greet everyone at the door with “Hello Beautiful!” Because we mean it. At The Hive, we see beauty in everything and everyone. We are so grateful to our wonderful guests and staff who make everything possible!
The brands we support are Surface Hair, Redken, Bioelements, Bohemian Reves, Kitsch and more!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building our audience on socials is an ongoing endeavor. As a new business, we’re really still in the “awareness” stage where people are just learning that we exist. We have made fantastic strides in the local social market.
Both The Hive and individual staff help maintain the responsibility of advertising on social media. Because the salon market is so competitive, each stylist plays a critical role in reaching new customers as does the salon itself. As a team we have social media goals, sometimes even challenges for pizza parties and gift cards to boost morale around social media and encourage content collection. It’s a team effort, and because we’ve got a great team, we are having great feedback!

We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
For our customers convenience we do have e-commerce, via our manufacturer and Salon Interactive. So customers now have access to salon quality product under a controlled msrp, complete with free shipping on items over $50. Customers can access this feature in the “Shop Retail” page of our website. Www.TheHiveLandOLakes.com
