We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Desmond Roberson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Desmond, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was a kid, I watched my mom and her friends sing in the church choir. From that experience, I began to sing and became popular. I was later invited to sing with a kids community choir where I met my wife. I was also a member of the school choir. This later developed into singing with a local quartet with all adult men who wanted this 12yr old to sing with them. I was honored. Once they began doing big shows, I knew that this was what I wanted to do. Since then, I’ve based my life around my music and being successful.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Desmond Roberson. I have been in the gospel music industry (regionally) for about 27 years. I’ve devoted my life to the music that I love. I began my journey with the local group Elder Carl Joseph & The Spiritual Tru Tones in my hometown (Madison, FL). We traveled the entire southern region and beyond. Those guys taught and groomed me to be the best I could be. I later joined another group based in Georgia (Chosen & Faithful) and through that process, I developed a family group titled Desmond Roberson & The Roberson Bunch. To date, the Roberson Bunch (which consists of my children and my wife) is the most successful entity I’ve been part of. We cracked the top 50 on ITunes, were on the front cover of a magazine, won every award that we were nominated for, and continue to thrive. I’m very pleased that God would trust me to lead my family in this industry. We know and understand that HE allows us to borrow his songs to bless others, and he’s done just that. One of our staples is also the first song that we ever released titled “Strength”. It’s a song that God placed on my heart after the passing of my mother. I believe that songs like Strength are blessings to the body of Christ. That our contribution to the world.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My wife and I are the parents of 8 children. I’ve always worked a full time job. In doing so, I was always told that you feed your dream until your dream feeds you. I could give several specific stories but I’ll just keep it general. There have been times where I’d spend my last to travel to a gig and not get a return. I remember we did a live recording that was somewhat reasonable, but due to the size of my family, I spent over and didn’t have any more money. However I continued to work and save so that I could afford to be an independent artist.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In Gospel Music, you have to really love God and the art. It’s not a lot of money that can be made in my genre. However I’ve always wanted to win a Stellar and a Grammy. It’s my driving force. Also I made a few people a promise that I plan to keep. I promised my mother and my producer (who have both passed away) that I’d make them proud.
