We recently connected with Desmond Helms and have shared our conversation below.
Desmond, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
Getting my first client was the most exciting time of my life. I just had let my friend Laron Flowers in on the thought of me becoming a videographer. One day heading home he called and asked if I would be interested in shooting a wedding. without hesitation, knowledge, and not to mention the equipment I agreed. I reached out to the clients and spoke with confidence that I could make their wedding film memorable. All I knew is that if I could convince them of my work, I could deliver. Not only did I book the wedding but I also charged WAY more than I should’ve if I should’ve at all with no knowledge. The rest was history! From that moment on I’ve been filming weddings.

Desmond, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Desmond Helms. I am a 29 year old videographer out of Dothan, AL. I got into this business after the passing of my mother, Pamela Coleman in 2022. Not having many memories through the years of us together gave me the idea. Life is too short to not film every moment possible in life. Videos are the perfect way to keep those memories forever. I specialize in documentary-like, cinematic styled videos. Weddings, Events, Promotional, Interviews, etc. Of course there are plenty of videographers that could be called for any job but what makes me different is the style of shooting, the pre-production before even arriving, the line of questioning to be more informed, THE STORY. Even thing I shoot has to tell a story. I am most proud of the opportunities that has come about during this journey. the people I’ve met such as Shrike Nicole, Cupid, Mike Clark Jr. etc. I want clients present and future to know no matter the job the style or level of production it can be done with confidence and class!

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has been word of mouth and simply the work itself. A lot of clients have reached out because they have either seen or has been recommended. We can’t forget social media!

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I have one word to answer this. Timecode!! As a videographer we film a lot of footage. Different angles, audio from different people. etc. Its a pain to line up everything using waveform. it could take a lot of time. Timecode was the answer to my prayers. One click with timecode and everything is synced and in line.
