We recently connected with Desiree Young and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Desiree thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I’ve been writing all my life. It’s always been how I expressed myself and processed my internal world. In 2017 as I was driving home for work, I asked God what my marketable skill was; what was the thing that He created me for. He said writing and gave me the idea for my first novel. I started writing and after a few years of starting and stopping, in 2020 I published my first book. It was a work of fiction, and I did not have a lot of insecurity with writing it. However, when I wrote books 2-9, the giant of insecurity tried to stand in my way. Books 2 and 3 were memoirs in which I vulnerably shared about my mental health struggles and family issues. While I did my best not to p[ace blame and to be honoring towards the family members mentioned, I was still hesitant to hit publish. “What if they don’t like what I say? What if this doesn’t help anyone at all and I’m just whining to a bunch of strangers? What if…?” These insecurities almost drowned me. Even though I had heard from the Lord that He made me to write, and I had gotten multiple confirmations of this-I still worried about the impact (or lack there of) that my words would have. I remember with my 3rd book especially, I was so nervous that I almost backed out of publishing it. In that moment the Lord gave me a song of courage that I sang over myself, and He reminded me that my writing was for Him and His purposes and other peoples’ opinions have no place in my obedience to Him. Publishing this book was a risk I needed to take. I don’t believe I’ll ever fully know the impact of my obedience, but I have heard from a few people that they were encouraged and inspired by what I wrote. They felt seen, heard, and empowered in their own spiritual and healing journey. There are probably several others who I will never hear from that have felt impacted from the risk I took.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As I mentioned before I’ve been writing since I was young, and after hearing from the Lord that He made me to be a writer I went to work on my first book. I was starting and stopping and what stopped my back and forth was a mentor. Having a mentor come along and challenge me while providing a needed course correction was an essential key to me becoming a published author. This was also a key to me becoming a book coach. I realized that there were more men and women of faith who had stories in them that weren’t getting written or put out into the world. I also noticed when I went to bookstores there were so many works on display that were filled with smut, witchcraft, and other things that can taint a readers mind and soul. I wanted to empower other believers to write to bring the Kingdom back into the marketplace and on the shelves. Books filled with hope, redemption, restoration, pure, real love-not lust. Books that inspire people and share the revelation of who God is whether their writing fiction, nonfiction or fantasy. I wanted to take “I don’t know how to do this” out of the list of excuses people give for not writing or publishing their work. That is why I started Scribal Champion LLC and King’s Glory Publishing House. My company offers writing courses as well as group and individualized coaching to take writers through the ins and outs of writing and self publishing a story that is memorable, engaging, and inspiring. I offer an online community and support with other writers where there are weekly write-in sessions, goal setting, prayer, and prophetic encouragement.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
For those of you who believe that you are not creative-I want to challenge you and tell you that you are indeed, creative. You were made in the image of God and He is a creative being. He created the stars and the heavens-the earth and everything that fills it. He created every animal and sea, every man, woman and child. Creativity is part of His core and when He created you, He made you in His image. (Genesis 1:26-27) You being made in His image share in the creative nature of God. Others may tap into it more naturally than you, but you are still creative. If you look at yourself as not someone who is creative, you can disqualify yourself from assignments that God has actually called you to fulfill. One of my favorite illustrations of this is with John and Lisa Bevere. This power couple runs an international ministry touching thousands of lives. They have podcasts, mission trips, books and more. Did you know that for a while, they did not see books as part of their ministry? When God told Lisa to write a book, she struggled to get it done. Once it was, she told the Lord she didn’t want to do it again and that she would rather go through labor than write another book. The Lord told her that he was sad to hear her say that because there were more books that he wanted her to write. Upon hearing that she swallowed her feelings and has gone on to write several more books. When John received the call to write he sent his manuscript to a publisher that eviscerated him saying he had no business writing. Ouch! After he licked his wounds though, John enrolled in writing classes to learn how to write better. He has gone on to write several books that have gone worldwide. If john and Lisa had said, “I’m not creative, I’m not gonna write,” thousands of people would go without the revelations they’ve imparted about the Holy Spirit, Honor, Removing Sin, Walking in Identity and more. Don’t hold yourself back from the impact God wants to make through your obedience. If you have a story idea, pursue it. We need your story. There’s another person’s breakthrough hidden in your risk taking and obedience. Take the step. Take the challenge. Write the book.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about what I do is two fold. The first is being able to connect with people in a deep and meaningful way. Books have an immersive quality to them, and can often swim in our heads long after we’ve finished them. Knowing that my work-the fiction, nonfiction, and fantasy-can help people is a great joy. The second is helping writers cross the finish line and hold their own book in their hands. Knowing that I got to help someone achieve their dream and live out their calling, and that someone else is going to be impacted by what they wrote is an indescribable joy.
