Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Desiree Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Desiree, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear stories from your time in school/training/etc.
In 2018 I started esthetics school at AVEDA Institute Dallas.AVEDA is a school with a holistic outlook and a Ayurvedic approach. It was a 7 month course with 10 hour days Tuesdays,Thursday’s,and Saturdays..I was in class with about 20 other students and we had 3-4 instructors which rotated from time to time. The first 3 months I spent in the classroom learning all about skin and practicing on my classmates and the last few months I spent in clinic practicing hands on what I had learned on models and discounted guests.I loved school so much.I was new to the industry when I started school and I knew nothing about skin but I was eager to learn and determined to succeed and come out ready to pursue a career in the beauty industry.I love making people feel better about themselves and I always have.I think that is something that I carry in my heart and will never leave me.In 2019 I graduated from Aveda and passed my state exams and became licensed.
Desiree, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In 2019 I was offered a position by my best friend Aniyah Vasquez who is a esthetician/lash artist in Dallas.I worked in her salon alongside other estheticians and I started off doing only facials, waxing, and chemical peels with my kit from school and a few products I was able to purchase.Aniyah was a great mentor to me and helped me get clients to book with me.If I had any questions or didn’t know something she would step in and help me quickly.Within a few months of being out of school and working I needed more consistent income so I applied at a waxing chain and I started working there. That is where I learned full body waxing including Brazilian, legs, and arms using hard wax.I learned what I had not learned in school about waxing and I became really great at it.A couple of weeks after working there all salons were forced to shut down due to the COVID 19 outbreak (early 2020).Once salons were allowed to open up I received a job offer at a Medspa.I was very nervous and apprehensive on accepting the job offer at first due to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and me knowing nothing about working in a Medspa but I went ahead and got back to work and it was a very good decision on my part.Over the next 6 months I was certified in microneedling, body contouring ,and teeth whitening at the advice of my ex boss which I did great at and I also enrolled in laser school to become a laser hair removal technician.Although everything seemed to be going well I battled mental health episodes and burnout frequently.I ultimately decided in early 2021 to part ways with the Medspa.I took time to figure things out.I even purchased new equipment and went back to assist and work with Aniyah. My life felt like a rollercoaster at times but I was learning lessons and was determined to make it through,In December 2022 I started working at an IV infusion bar as lead esthetician and once again I felt alive and my passion for esthetics was ignited once again.I was sent to several trainings within my time working there and I became trained in providing Hydrafacials and advanced my microneedling skills.I also did body contouring there and learned about the benefits of IV vitamin therapy and cryotherapy.I moved on from there amicably and I now work between 2 different medspas 5-6 days a week offering facials, hydrafacials, microneedling, chemical peels,,and laser hair removal.I’ve also got back into trainings to further my knowledge in esthetics and business. You Can book with me through any of my social media platforms.I also am a paid content creator on social media and I am a part of a network marketing healthcare company named Vasayo for extra sources of income. My goals now actually feel attainable and I’m hoping to be a known face around Dallas,TX and surrounding areas. What sets me apart from other estheticians is that I’ve been through so much within my life and in my career that I remain strong and I never judge a client.I’ve never met a stranger and every client gets an instant sense of security being in a treatment room with me .I’m super relatable, strong and I’ll never give up on my journey.I joined esthetics for a reason and although things have been tough at times they have also been very rewarding and I wake up every morning loving what I do and who I do it for.I have a 12 year old son who I’ve also had challenges with but at the end of the day he is my motivation to keep pushing.Being a single mother pursuing a career is tough sometimes but one day my son will look back see how all of my hard work pays off and hopefully he won’t be too far behind me.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back of course I would choose the same profession.I feel like I’m made for it!!I’ve worked dead end jobs in the past and I’ve had hobbies here and there but I never felt a spark about anything else the way that I do about being an esthetician. My life has changed tremendously over the last few years and my sense of self worth and confidence has improved.I’ll definitely be here for the long haul!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
A positive attitude is helpful for succeeding in this field.Stay positive,be optimistic,be friendly, give off good energy, network and meet other estheticians, post and promote on social media and engage with other’s posts,go out and meet new people.Always look your best ,I believe you are a walking billboard.Be 100% for your clients at all times.Communicate with them well and be courteous of their time.Continue your education as often as you can.Opposition will come, this is definitely no fairy tale land but if you had a bad day don’t let it last long and do better! No day is quite like the day before but everyday there is something different to look forward to!
