We were lucky to catch up with Desiree Torres recently and have shared our conversation below.
Desiree, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
These are things I’ve been coming to realize and taking time to do to become successful. I’ve been taking this year to plan out my business endeavor. Laying out my foundation to becoming financially free and generationally wealthy. Starting with working on my inner self and getting my mental and physical right before the real work begins. Understanding that discipline is an important factor to becoming successful during this process. Being crafty and creative is half the work. Which to me comes very naturally. Always flowing with many different ideas. Creating is infinite and will always be something near and dear to me; while being able to turn that creativity into capital is a whole different level of entrepreneurship. I did well with hair, makeup, and music. I’ve done the whole find myself thing with figuring out where I want to be and it has really helped me in setting the bar for myself. Every single thing I do has to make some sort of sense for the bigger picture. Every minute and every dollar needs to make sense as to where it goes. Learning to make everything count is where I’m currently at. Taking a step back from myself to get my business plan and goals set for success.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Desiree Torres; creator of much/ Business woman in the making. Some of you know me as; EstiloDes aka DeathRaE or as of recent the taco lady. I actually came into the industry as a makeup/ Hairstyling/ rapping artist. Learning the ways of a full time entrepreneur. Experiencing all the great things in the Arizona artists scene. Getting my knowledge, experience, and work ethic up in order to move forward with my career and life goals. My focus shifted from artist life to business woman. During this; I’ve learned to stay focused and it has been such a challenge as I’m now learning the ropes of becoming a business owner. Starting from scratch and working my way up.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I actually started selling tacos to make some extra money; and was doing it with my dad at shows that I performed at or was requested to. We did a few events and ended up doing a wedding for about 100 people. It was that night I realized food is something I can do as a career and enjoy with my family. Food is always in, It’s ever evolving, and something fun as well. Very good source of revenue too. Studying the art and being able to bring my own culture and traditions to the table (no pun intended) is what really drives me to make sure this is a great ever lasting business. My goal is to provide myself and family with financial freedom while sticking to my creative roots.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Learning and unlearning is the whole process itself. Learning everything from the kitchen to the numbers that help manage the whole operation. Understanding that being rich is a mentality and takes a lot of time and effort to execute. Having all the ideas is one thing but being able to turn something creative into capital like I said before is a whole different level of entrepreneurship. I learned that I need more money to make more money. I had to make time to actually make money. Which I had no time and low funds at that time, it definitely wasn’t enough to start a business, let alone the actual foundation to plan such things. So I had much to do as far as actually taking the time to sit down and make a business plan. Putting aside some of the many things I love so that I’m focused. As I started to become good I also started to fall behind financially. You can make these things seem and look easy while beating around the bush with yourself about coming to terms that it’s not easy financially. Especially when most of the time I was breaking even. With not knowing how to prioritize income I also realized this might be something I actually have to study and put my all into and honestly can’t do alone. So I had to start from scratch and draw out a new blueprint. I’ve been working and educating myself on how the food industry works. Where to start and to set real expectations and goals for myself and future business. Experiencing those things at that time was perfect for me.
