Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Desiree Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Desiree, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I actually quit my last job in the summer of 2021 and have had this thought plenty of times since then. It would definitely be nice to have a consistent check coming in but I definitely don’t see myself working for anyone else ever again. I truly believe that I’m happier as a business owner, even though I have to do absolutely EVERYTHING myself. But I would not be here without my support system. My parents and my sisters truly believe in me and I really just want to make them proud. Even though I’ve been making wigs since 2016, I’ve only been a licensed hairstylist for 11 months so it’s really just the beginning for me. I hoping this second half of the year I can create relationships with my client and hopefully one day I’ll be booked a month in advance. I’m going at my own pace but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Desiree, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, my name is Desiree Thomas and I’m a licensed cosmetologist located in Torrance California. I honestly go into hair when I decided I wanted to wear wigs in 2016 because I was tired of sew ins. It also came down to the fact that it was so hard to find a reliable stylist that I could trust and afford so I started to purchase hair from Ali Express and make my own wigs by hand. I just wanted my hair done but I received so many compliments in person and then the people around me started asking me to make them wigs to so I just made an instagram page and started working from there on.
Now I have clients everywhere. I’ve shipped wigs and bundles all over the states these last few years. Clients can come to me for a custom machine made wig or they can just purchase one from my website.
I’m most proud of my resilience. It hasn’t been easy at all and I’ve made plenty mistakes but I’m learning to take one thing at a time. My clients honestly keep me going because without them I wouldn’t be where I am now and I know I still have more goals to accomplish so I try not to stress so much anymore.
For anyone who is interested in booking with me, just know I’m always on time and I try my best to communicate quickly and efficiently. My main goal is for my client to be happy with what they’ve paid for. I understand that they’re spending their hard owned money with me so I just want to make sure they’re always satisfied.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
During the pandemic I got on TikTok and just started making videos out of boredom but this is what really helped me make a name for myself. The orders were coming in at an alarming rate. I’ve learned that the videos where I’m just having fun and not overthinking so much are usually the videos go viral so I would definitely suggest posting consistently so you can find out what works for you and eventually everything else will fall into place. Social media and word of mouth are the two main factors in building a following and clientele. People want to see EVERYTHING so show off your talent and have fun with it.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Right now I’m trying out the app StyleSeat. They really help clients find you and get you booked if you’re looking for clients in the area. But now I’m trying to find more ways to reach more people. I would love to be fully booked one day.
