Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Desiree Tay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Desiree, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Being an artist was something I knew I wanted to do since I was really little. So far, It’s been a journey of self-discovery and creative expression that often defies conventional career norms.
While it’s true that many of us might struggle financially, being a musician is a profoundly fulfilling journey that transcends the boundaries of time and space, connecting both the artist and the audience in a unique and transcendent way. It is a pursuit that goes beyond mere notes and melodies, offering a deep sense of purpose and joy. The fulfillment derived from pursuing music surpasses the limitations of monetary compensation for me. This was something that I had thought a lot about and had to come to terms with at a very young age. This has been the BEST decision I’ve made in my life and I wouldn’t trade this life for the world.
If I weren’t a musician, I think I would lean towards being a vet or a zookeeper. I’m a big animal lover and I think it’ll be cool to work with them. Who knows, maybe I would’ve packed my bags, move to Australia and work a the Australia Zoo under Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warrior Program!
Desiree, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Desiree’s foray into the world of music began 16 years ago in 2007 when she felt the call to join her school band’s percussion section. Remaining actively involved over the following nine years, Desiree gathered experience and knowledge she would continue to build upon. Countless performances poised and prepped her to perform with the confidence and enthusiasm she currently exudes. Not only this but the passion to continue learning was fueled all the more.
Since then, the pursuit to master her craft has been buoyed by numerous opportunities presented to Desiree by industry veterans and the privilege of being under the tutelage of Marcelo Woloski (Percussion, Snarky Puppy), Erik Hargrove (Drums, James Brown) and Eguie Castrillo (Percussion, Jennifer Lopez).
In between her unhealthy obsession with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and being a full-time student at Berklee College of Music, Desiree has forged herself quite a fledging career path. She has held roles in various fields of the music industry such as drum technician, live sound, instrument repair for guitar & drums, backline, sessionist and recording work.
In an industry that can at times be volatile, Desiree has managed to endear herself to a number of stalwarts on the live band circuit. She has performed at festivals like the Sing 50 Concert and Singapore Jazz Festival alongside local music icons like JJ Lin and Stefanie Sun, along with overseas assignments in Hongkong and Chengdu and various radio appearances on 987fm and Class 95 in Singapore. Adding to her accolades and achievements, Desiree found herself sessioning with Singapore’s best and securing a position as the percussionist for the eponymous Shirlyn + the UnXpected and more recently opening for Taylor Bennett alongside Niu Raza.
Desiree’s humility and zeal for constant improvement, coupled with her proficiency in public and artiste relations, display a maturity beyond her years. In the quest to lend her talents to help raise others up and leave her mark on the music industry, she is purpose-driven, capable, and set on reaching her goals.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best thing that society can do is to be present.
The most direct way to support local artists is by purchasing their artwork, music, books, or crafts. You could also attend local art markets, exhibitions, or concerts and invest in the creative output of your community. By actively supporting local artists, communities can foster creativity, enrich their cultural identity, and stimulate economic growth, all while enjoying the myriad benefits that art brings to our lives. When you visit and support local performance spaces, galleries, and theaters, you help sustain them financially as well.
Also, encourage art education and appreciation in schools, emphasizing the importance of the arts in fostering creativity and cultural enrichment
If you can’t be present, then help to spread the word about local performances, art events, and exhibitions. Encourage friends and family to attend, and share information on social media to increase visibility. Offer art education programs and workshops in schools and communities. By nurturing creativity in the younger generation, you can create a sustainable future for local art scenes.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Honestly, I’d say that my entire career stands as a testament to my resilience, but if I were to pinpoint a defining chapter, it would be during my time at LASALLE College of the Arts. I wanted to challenge myself and pay off my tuition, so I took on the demanding dual role of a late-night musician in bars while diligently pursuing my studies.
Picture this: hauling my cumbersome instruments on buses and trains, enduring a packed schedule that began with classes at 9 am and concluded with performances in the central business district until 1 am. Balancing rigorous academics, practice sessions, and the nocturnal music scene, my days often extended into the early hours of the morning.
Despite the exhaustion, this period was exceptionally rewarding. It not only bolstered my resilience but also instilled in me invaluable lessons in time management and professionalism within my craft. These experiences have become the bedrock of my journey, shaping me into the dedicated and skilled professional I am today
