We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Desiree’ Nixon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Desiree’ below.
Desiree’, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
The most important lesson I learned when working in bridal, before starting my business, was to follow my clients’ lead.
As bridal stylists we of course, had sales goals as individuals and as a store, however, it never really felt natural to push a bride to make a purchase. Instead I would follow her lead. If she mentioned something she was considering, I would let her know the options we had available and let her try those on. If we didn’t have what she liked I would suggest a different location or even other stores, where she might be able to find something closer to what she had in mind. Oftentimes, my transparency led to them coming back to our store to give me and our store the sale instead. Doing this helped me to make the best sales when I wasn’t even trying to make sales. Many brides thanked me for my authenticity and transparency.
Today with my styling business, transparency is one of my core values and plays a part in every client interaction. It’s important to me that my client is able to trust the things that I suggest to them aren’t to sell them, but to truly keep their best interest in mind. I treat my clients how I would like someone to treat me if I were hiring them.

Desiree’, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey guys! My name is Desiree’ Nixon. I am the owner of DNN Style, a styling business that I founded in August of 2021.
Fashion and style is in my blood and has always been at the forefront of my life for as long as I can remember. I got my degree in fashion merchandising and marketing at Georgia Southern University, and soon after I worked as an intern at Modern Luxury. After that I started part-time at David’s Bridal, before starting my styling business.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed my career as a stylist, I felt as though something was missing. It wasn’t until last year that I realized what that “something” was.
I have always had a special love for traveling growing up. Alongside my fashion aspirations, I thought a job like Samantha Brown (travel channel) had, would be a dream. Fast forward to now, DNN Style’s primary service offering is travel styling.
My main goal when working with my travel styling clients is to create as much ease as possible. For most people packing and deciding what to bring on vacation is the most dreaded part of traveling. This is why, in addition to curating personalized looks for each excursion during your trip, we will also professionally pack your bag to maximize space. This service is complete with a look book to refer back to the outfits we discussed for your trip. Other service offerings include full service wardrobe refinement as well as photoshoot styling. (virtual styling is also offered for non local clients)
While paying close attention to trends and ‘fashion rules’ may help me with my job, the thing that sets me apart is that I don’t allow myself or my clients to live inside of that box. What is most important to me is that my client feels confident in the clothes that they put on their body. It’s my job to help them discover their unique style, not push them into traditional or mainstream fashion standards. I’m proud to say that I am able to stay true to myself while running my business and am not willing to compromise my values to unethically book a client. I approach style from a holistic point of view. It’s not just about what you put on your body, but who you are as a person and how you want to show up in the world.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Selfishly, the most rewarding part of my job is the feeling I get when the looks I pick out make someone else light up. It’s a similar feeling to making a meal for a gathering and everyone loves it. I truly feel that our purpose in life is to A.) create and B.) help others, and this is just the way that I get to do both of those things. There is no reason that anyone should feel uncomfortable in what they put on their body, and I want to be the person that lovingly gives permission to those that need help finding the clothes that make them feel most comfortable and like the truest version of themselves.
Caring about what goes on your body is a form of self care. It’s a trickle down effect and reflects into the way you feel. When you love the outfit you’re wearing or the way your hair is styled for example, you feel good and it affects your entire day. It’s a wonderful feeling to have the opportunity to help someone feel confident in how they show up everyday.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
The most common misconception about styling and fashion careers in general is that we just play in clothes all day. In reality, my job requires a substantial amount of research, time, and emotional support for each of my clients.
I do in fact play in clothes, but that part only happens after spending time with my client to discover their personal style and finding the best stores to shop from to meet their desires. For other clients that prefer to have looks created from pieces they already have, I help them hand pick the things that are the best representation of the style they are seeking to achieve. Then we play in clothes ;)
