Alright, Desiree thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Starting the journey to earn a full-time living from my creative work was not for the faint of heart. It was filled with both triumphs and challenges. At first, my professional path diverged from the creative realm as I pursued an undergraduate degree in social and criminal justice, leading me to the same mundane 9 to 5 jobs. However, the lack of creativity left me feeling empty and unfulfilled, prompting a pivotal decision in 2015. So in 2012 my husband and I moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming for some change. While there and discovering the stunning landscapes the breathtaking scenery, particularly the Grand Teton National Park, ignited a spark within me, compelling me to capture its beauty with a humble point-and-shoot camera.
Despite the initial euphoria, life took an unexpected turn with a divorce, forcing me to part ways with my camera and return to the familiar grind of a 9 to 5 routine. The years ahead mirrored a cycle of emotional numbness and lack of passion until a spontaneous trip to San Francisco reignited my dormant aspirations. Mesmerized by the picturesque surroundings, I questioned why I wasn’t pursuing my love for photography professionally.
Sooooo…. In 2015, I took a leap of faith, reaching out to an investor to acquire my first DSLR camera. However, transitioning to working full-time in photography was not an instantaneous process. Building a portfolio and honing my skills were essential steps, and although I was good, I knew there was room for growth. The major obstacles were often internal, battling self-doubt and the belief that I wasn’t worthy of being a professional. Learning manual mode on my camera felt like a daunting challenge.
Persistence became my ally as I relentlessly pushed myself out of comfort zones, while dismantling negative self-talk, and embracing the learning curve. Now while internal growth is subjective and unfolds at its own pace, reflecting on my journey, I acknowledge that expediting the process of networking, confidently seeking business opportunities, and valuing my work through appropriately raised prices could have propelled my career even further. It’s a testament to the power of perseverance and self-belief, challenging the limits I placed on myself and gradually evolving into the professional photographer I am today.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I am probably repeating myself a bit, but here it is (LOL): My journey into the world of photography started as a quest for personal fulfillment. After earning my undergraduate degree in social and criminal justice, I found myself lost in the monotony of a 9-to-5 job. A pivotal moment came when I spent a year in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the Grand Teton National Park. Inspired, I picked up a point-and-shoot camera and began to document the world around me.
However, life threw a curveball in the form of a divorce, leading me to sell my camera and return to the corporate grind. The monotony persisted until a spontaneous trip to San Francisco reignited my passion for photography. Determined to pursue my love professionally, I sought an investor, got my hands on a DSLR, and officially embarked on my photographic journey in 2015.
Building a full-time career from photography wasn’t an instant transition. It required dedicated effort to build my portfolio and refine my skills. The biggest challenges were often internal—overcoming self-doubt and pushing through the learning curve of manual mode. Yet, my persistence prevailed, and I conquered those hurdles, emerging as a professional photographer committed to capturing the essence of each unique story.
