We recently connected with Desiree “Dez” Woodson and have shared our conversation below.
Desiree “Dez”, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My learning experience was quite different than most photographers I know. As where most had a mentors and school to guide them and teach them the craft, I had neither. I learned through YouTube (believe it or not) and by trial and error. I definitely think having a mentor or formal education in photography would have sped up the learning process. Skills that are most essential would have to be understanding the concept of lighting. The only real obstacle I would say would have to be the learning curve I had to overcome.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hey Y’all! I’m Dez and I’ve been doing photography for almost 4 years now. I got into photography because I’ve always had a love for it. Some see their flaws as a problem but I see their flaws as their beauty. I promise my clients to always highlight their true and genuine beauty. Because as some of us know from experience sometimes it’s hard to appreciate our beauty. So as a photographer I promise my clients to highlight their true beauty because everyone is beautiful in their own way and I will as showcase that. What’ sets me apart is the fact that I’m in the business of capturing genuine beauty, flaws and all. What I’m most proud of is my growth over the years.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Honestly I had to work overtime to be able to buy my first set of equipment camera and lighting. And even then my first camera was on a payment plan cause I was a full time college student. And over the years I’ve used my everyday jobs to fund my business as I’ve continued to grow.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Honestly word of mouth! Don’t get me wrong, social media is amazing but the word of mouth from my clients has gotten me so many opportunities and I’m forever grateful.
