Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Desiree Butler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Desiree thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I decided to start my doula practice right before the pandemic hit. I legally set up my business, taught myself how to create my website, designed business cards, and began networking. I wasn’t sure how it was all going to work out, but I followed my passion. In my first year of business I was blessed to attend 22 births! I wish that I would have had partners earlier on in the business. It really helps to have people on your team who share the same dreams and passions as you. It’s great to have support. For any young professionals who are considering starting their own practice, my advice is to find your team as you build your dream. A strong team will help create a strong business.
Desiree, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey it’s your girl (Yes! to Pronouns) Des, youngest of 8 siblings and only girl. My Labor support Journey (Doula) started many years ago (Ask me about my story!), and has now flourished into a beautiful business passion that recognizes women/birthing people through all walks of life. As a full spectrum doula, I support families experiencing any and all variations of birth and loss, planned and unplanned. My goal is to assist every family with honesty and unconditional ear. My personalized care is tailored to fit each family’s individual needs, and is centered around the birthers’ vision of their ideal birth. I provide compassionate, non-judgmental, evidence-based support, and gladly welcome LGBTQIA individuals, and non-traditional family styles and relationships.
I am continuously engaged in ongoing education, to better understand this work and advocate for evidence based care and options.
I am a person who understands the physiology of birth, and also believes that through education and support, guidance, validation, birth can be a journey that is positive, incredible, and successful however that looks to each individual birthing person/family.
As doulas, we are professionally trained, non-medical, labor support assistants. We provide expert guidance and nurturing reinforcement throughout the entire birth process. Doulas provide emotional and physical support backed by evidence-based information.
Postpartum doula services help families adjust to life with a newborn. We help ease this transition by providing emotional support and an extra set of helping hands. Whether it’s your first baby or the 100th, a village is necessary to help with the adjustment period. There are three of us, so be prepared to be loved and valued!
Pillow Talk of Birth also offers a variety of birth related merchandise available on our website
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
PillowTalk of birth consists of 3 partners, Desiree Butler Founding partner first met Aiesha Williams in 2019 we both were attending online doula training. I was contacted by Aiesha on facebook as she had an extra copy of the manual for the class and reached out and offered me the copy. Fast forward to 2022 I had been searching for partners to expand my business Facebook had removed my business page as they are very picky with how much information and education you provide on the platform. I only had Aiesha contact through the FB business page. I went on an in depth facebook search because we had not been in contact with each other often so all I had was a name. I couldn’t remember her last name but facebook found her. I FB messaged her and told her I was looking for partnership in the Doula business, she said she was interested and had a very close friend who was also interested which brings in the trifecta Candace McCloud the third partner. We had one meeting and it instantly clicked and in July 2022 we officially became business partners.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
What is most helpful for succeeding in my field is having a genuine compassion for life. I and my partners share the same love for birth and each has unique personalities that shine through in this field. I am very passionate and bold. One of my partners is a great teacher with an amazing personality. My third partner has a very calm, nurturing spirit. All of these traits combined are perfect for the families that we serve
