We recently connected with Desirae Newell and have shared our conversation below.
Desirae, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My brother really was the inspiration for starting Fisherman’s Pride Wild Alaskan Seafood LLC. When I was pregnant with our first child, he approached my husband and I with a business proposition where he would start bringing back part of his salmon harvest from AK to sell it to fish lovers in the Fraser area, which is where he lived at the time. Being from the PNW, we both saw the major lack of quality, fairly priced seafood in the Colorado area. We wanted to offer our community the quality of fish that we grew up on without the insane price that you find in landlocked Colorado. Unfortunately, at the time, he needed more support from my husband and I than we were able to offer with a newborn baby so we all decided to postpone until I was at a point in my life where I could really dedicate myself to growing our company.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 2nd generation Bristol Bay salmon fisherman (lady) as well as the co-owner of Fisherman’s Pride Wild Alaskan Seafood LLC. Fisherman’s Pride specializes in bringing certified sustainable, certified wild caught salmon, halibut and sablefish to the state of Colorado. We are extremely passionate about providing fresh fish to our communities and to offer it in ways that everyone can afford to bring it to their table. Wither you buy 100# of fish or a single fillet we are delighted to have you as our customer.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Our funding for our first year of business came from the money that I make commercial fishing in Bristol Bay. Basically whatever I make goes directly into our business account and helps us seed our fish for the next seasons shipment. Since our start-up costs were relatively small, we were able to start the business without external investors.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth works fabulously for us! I definitely post in various social media groups but I honestly think that the most effective method of building clientele is when a customer tells their friends about how amazing our product is.
