We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Desi Blù a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Desi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
Ok so one day i was recording in the studio with my producer. We were finishing up, but having conversations about as Indie artist you have to have multiple streams of income to support our dreams/careers. So in that truth, i asked “well what would be my multiple stream, I’ve only performed, I haven’t set up merch or anything of that sort quite yet”. He continued and said “umm you know you can get paid by just performing as well right?” At that point i needed to know ALLLL the details because that was literally something I’ve always done. He was so helpful to show me the ins and outs of how to set things such as BMI, ASCAP, etc up so not only will be i get royalties from my songs, but also my performances, and so much more. That was a gem & a moment I’ll forever remember, and just how excited i was to see i have so much more things in my dream i can branch off into doing. Shoutout to my producer Leaux. You’re amazing for those pointers and gems!!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Heeyy! Well if you may not know me here’s a little bit about Destiny a.k.a DesiBlù. I am a multifaceted Artist. I Sing, Dance, Do makeup, graphic design, and so much more. I grew up with a voice in me since i can remember and that sprouted oh so fast. I was around many great singers growing up in my church, family, even schools I attended. I had a passion for it and didn’t know where it would lead me to, but i knew i was gifted and that I was a star in the making. I started becoming known in my church for “Tiny with the Big Voice”. They would call me this because of how small i was with such a skilled, big voice at such a young age. + my name is DesTINY haha, so it just went. I’ve always seen myself as wanting to be a singer or entertainer. I feel what sets me apart from others is i am the full package. I’m very versatile with my voice. I can sing R&B, to Pop,to Country, some Reggae, and so many other genres that I still have yet to step into. Also the fact that I do it all from my own looks, my graphics, i’m just a one stop shop haha. One of the things that I am most proud of is my current single titled “Layer of Lies”(L.O.L). This song has touched me & a lot of my supporters already and I went through so many mixed emotions while creating this song. I love this particular song because it got me to tap more into my vulnerable side of myself. The acronym in itself is a double entendre that I came up with that I thought that was pretty cool. When people listen to me, or my music, What I would want them to take from me is that we all go through life. Some days are greater than others some days aren’t so great but despite that, I want my supporters (everyone) to know they are loved, important, beautiful/handsome, and don’t let anyone stop you from doing the things you love or that’s in your heart. Follow your heart always.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, I feel the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to speak on so many great topics. Knowing someone out there might need that light to get out of that tunnel, you will always know that your art will touch someone and help them to maybe a dark time or even make them more happy. I love knowing that people can relate to my music and understand it from a deeper point of view than just words. Being able to collaborate, travel, & even perform and some of the most beautiful places is a dream that I’ve always knew I would live one day. I love the fact I can connect with so many different people such as myself and make magic and that’s what it’s all about.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society can do a lot better with uplifting each other. I feel as a society we are quick to compare or pit each other against one another when in reality we are all working towards something we love. Encouraging each other to not worry about who’s not gonna like what you put out, the numbers on what you put out, etc. I feel we all have a place in this world and we all have well enough room to all be successful in each and every area. Also as artist we put a lot of time, money, sweat & dedication into our crafts and I feel we are not acknowledged or paid enough. Having royalties over your art is cool and all but knowing how much we get to do ALLLL that is a rip off personally to me. It discourages people to not follow up with their dreams or continue to do what they love because they don’t see the benefits of it as they’re doing it . We definitely can do better as a society in putting more time, money, & energy involved into our artist’s royalties and overall back period.
