We recently connected with DeShona Charles and have shared our conversation below.
DeShona , appreciate you joining us today. Is your team able to work remotely? If so, how have you made it work? What, if any, have been the pitfalls? What have been the non-obvious benefits?
Remote work has been the absolute best thing that has ever happened to me! It has allowed me to be so much more flexible with how I conduct day-to-day operations. Less of my time is spent traveling to and from for meetings and many of my day-to-day tasks can be done remotely. This saves money in so many different areas. e.g. gas/mileage/office space/eating out.
DeShona , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a married mother of 2 children. I have an amazing support network and I would not be where I am, personally and professionally without them. In my leisure time, I enjoy reading, researching, time with family/friends, resting, and any time outdoors. I think that all of the fun that I had at Tennessee State University, prepared me for all of the “obstacle courses” that I am challenged with today.
If anyone would have asked me, 3 years ago, if I would have envisioned myself being a full-time entrepreneur, I would have said, “no way!” I quickly learned the value of growing towards multiple streams of income . I currently manage 3 businesses and there’s still more to come. I am living the life that I deserve, because I have taken control of my time and it’s up to me what I do with it. By no means, is it easy. I have been tested in so many ways since entering this realm and I am still here.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Realtor in the state of Georgia. They are two, very different paths, but I have been very successful with making valuable connections in the real estate industry, because of the skills that I have acquired as a therapist. Being a therapist is my first love, and real estate is a great pairing. I have been intrigued by all of the possibilities that investing in real estate can bring, since the early age of 16.
I am excited that I have just started to unveil all of my capabilities. For anyone who has done business with me or who will in the future, know that I will always work hard for all of of my clients and persons in my network. I will deliver beyond what is expected. Not only can you expect superb service from me, but I will also support you in your endeavors. Someone once told me, ‘you cannot keep what you don’t give away,” To me, that means giving away knowledge and other support (of course with boundaries). Help someone else and you will get it back in abundance and that’s the standard that I live by.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My reputation in business means the world to me. Listen, if I don’t have a good service/product, that means that I will not continue to get new referrals and there goes my business! It brings me great joy, during consultations, when I ask new, potential clients, “how were you referred,” and they inform me that they were referred by someone who utilized my services previously. Referrals are the best compliment!
Have you ever had to pivot?
The biggest pivot in my life is to ensure that I am investing my time and money wisely. As a full-time entrepreneur, there is no one telling me how to spend my time or my money. Time is money and if I am not spending it wisely, it will cost me lots of money and time. I am learning to take risks and not look at loss/mistakes as failure. Everything that I try in business will not be successful, but the only failure is the decision to not try.
