We recently connected with Deshon Junior and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Deshon, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge of profitability in video & photography is how much competition there is. It makes it hard to charge customers cause you don’t want to have your price more or the same as a competitor, but you also don’t want to charge less, so you are not under-pricing yourself. Then this makes it more challenging for new people coming into the game to make it harder for them to make a name for themselves. From experience, it’s not a fun time being in that stage of the business.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My being into videography came at a young age in third grade. When my elementary school introduced its video production class, my mind opened up to a world of Cameras, Sound, lighting, and all those technical aspects. Since that, I knew that’s what I wanted to do as a career. Since then, I’ve made it my forefront to join my church’s media team and become one of the best camera operators there. Which I did succeed at and have done for about seven years now, and still going. People saw the passion my camera work had behind it, leading to people telling me I should start my own Video Production business. I did in my junior year of high school, and it’s going great. I get consistent clients with great feedback on their finished products. As of now, I’m a freshman in college attending Lynn university. Here I’m going to continue expanding my knowledge in the art of Cinematography. And continue to grow my business to other parts of South Florida, offering my outstanding passion-filled services. I also help out buddies of mine on their shoots, which comes to me as a freelance Filmmaker and Cinematographer. While also gaining real-world experience doing what of love. Such as me shooting pictures for my local Chick-Fil-A (Atlantic Ave), and shooting their promotional photos professionally. I ultimately thank God, My mentors, Close Friends, My Church, and my Parents for everything and all the support.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What I think helped me build my reputation was my determination. And how visually people could see my passion for what I do. Especially at me being at the age of 18, it shows a lot to people older than me. Then I’m also always willing to learn, I never think I know more than others cause there’s always more to know. Then I have to thank customers for recommending to others and sharing my services with them which builds up my credibility.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
For me, the best source of new clients has been word of mouth from satisfied customers. I also have good friends that always mention my business whenever they know someone needs services that I can provide at high quality. And cause they see I never disappoint, they keep recommending me to more people.
