We recently connected with Deserie Fisher and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Deserie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In July 2016 my family and I moved from Orange County our home for 30+yrs to San Diego for my son to continue his education here in San Diego at the same school my brothers and sister attended.
In 2018, however I lost my job in the Mortgage Industry one year after I bought my first house in San Diego. My husband and I had thrown around the idea of starting a band, him already being a musician and me going into management as well as the booking manager. The idea now had to become a reality to keep our household going.
It was a big risk at the time because we had a mortgage payment and my income was the main source of our living and everyday needs. Was being a full time musician for my husband and a booking manager for our band going to pay the bills?
Deserie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Band Manager – Booking Agent (available with no experience) I work hard and I am creative. That’s what my resume would have said.
I needed to survive, and I know how to do that. It was time to get the plan executed.
I picked my band and called a rehearsal. I started out by video taping and editing a music video myself all in one day and getting that out to venues to get a gig!
It took me 2wks to land our first gig at Coyotes in Carlsbad, CA. We played and got a call back for another date. Once that ball began rolling we got a few more venues and began having steady call backs. We were asked to perform on San Diego’s KUSI in March 2019 ( just 8months after we put the band together)
Our job is to make people have a better day, make them smile and bring some joy back in their life. Music feeds the soul and heals the mind. Do we do that, yes we do. I work with a great team of musicians, who are the absolute best at what they do.
I often get asked how did you get all the best musicians? I believe God worked that out for me, I provide good management, they provide excellent musicianship and DDMG provides the very best in Live Music.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In July of 2019 my dad convinced me I should brand my name, and go with an LLC.
Thus began Dezie Dez Music Group, LLC (now The DDMG) A business owner? A manager? A booking manager? Yes all risks because I’ve never done this before! My mindset has always been to out do myself! If I don’t know how to do something, I’m going to figure out how to do it.
In March 2020 everything stopped, a new risk and new challenges came with Covid and a Worldwide Pandemic. I felt responsible for my band, for their families and began to do the only thing I knew how to do, which was to pray for Gods Provision.
We did 2 stay at home concerts and raised a total of $1800 to help our band and others until we were able to obtain financial assistance. We began working again as a band in May 2020 and haven’t stopped. I asked for provision and God gave us abundance!
In Jan 2021 I began booking other artists with the partnership of Sycuan Casino. I knew that I needed to keep helping other artists who were not working. Music is an art that feeds their soul of not only the creator, but also the receiver.
I needed to keep providing the space and freedom for them to express their art, their passion and their gift.
I continue to find ways to market the musicians and keep things fresh and new.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
What the pandemic did for me was opened my eyes to thinking outside of the box, to draw outside the lines and to work in a way that always helps and supports others. By doing that I have been blessed with so much joy seeing Gods hand in everything. I am a people watcher, I enjoy seeing people smile laugh and dance like no ones watching.
I love to see the success of my bands. It’s not about the money for me, it never has been my focus. Yet I feel that because it hasn’t been my focus, we get blessed with more!
I have build strong relationships with people who I now call friends which is tough in this industry.
DDMG has helped families thrive not just survive!
