We were lucky to catch up with Des Mulrooney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Des thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I started out as an athlete, when I was getting injured in track and field consistently, the only way I could stay cool and relevant at my school was to be funny and joke about my situation. Some people peak in high school, I peaked in 8th grade. I was a basketball star in middle school, but once my basketball career fell off, all I could do was joke with friends about how I lost all my popularity. That’s when I wanted to become a comedian.
Des, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a 23 year old stand up comedian and actor from Chicago. I recently co-starred as “David” in the new movie The Road Dog which is out now on Amazon and Apple TV. My stand up is mostly stories about my life and things that I experience from my perspective. Everything I talk about on stage is real. My stand up is also family friendly.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a comedian is that no matter what happens to me, or whatever bad thing that happens in my life, I have the opportunity to make it into a joke or make productive use out of it.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think a lot of people think that once you’ve been in a movie or on TV that you’ve “made it”. Let me tell you from experience, I just starred in a movie alongside famous actors on a major streaming platform and I’m still a little league baseball umpire. I have to wear a cup because 9 year old pitchers are hitting me with fast balls in the nuts, believe me, movies and TV does not mean you made it.
