We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Des Loveless a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Des, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’ve always had a passion for fashion. I started in the modeling industry, working in front of the camera, while also taking both film and digital photography courses in high school. As a naturally creative person, I became interested in wardrobe styling while studying photography and color grading through masterclasses.
To develop my skills, I spent countless hours photographing friends and experimenting with Photoshop and Lightroom, eventually creating my own signature aesthetic. Overall, I’m self-taught and never attended school specifically for my craft. Looking back, I do wish I had taken more courses from photographers whose work I admire, as I didn’t have much exposure to mentorship or formal industry training. However, that independent journey helped shape my creative perspective and taught me to trust my own artistic instincts.

Des, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a jack of all trades in the fashion and beauty industry. From wardrobe styling, creative direction for brands, digital marketing, content creation, and photography. Working with magazines, fashion brands, in film, etc.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Although I’ve been in the industry for many years, it was never my primary source of income. For most of that time, photography and creative work were passions I was fortunate enough to pursue while I was married. After nine years of marriage, I went through a divorce in 2020, which completely changed my life and career trajectory.
Because my former spouse had been the primary breadwinner, I suddenly had to become fully self-sufficient and rebuild my life from the ground up. That transition pushed me to expand beyond photography and pivot into fashion marketing, branding, and content creation for businesses and brands. It was the first time I had lived on my own and been solely responsible for supporting myself, so adapting wasn’t really a choice, it was a necessity.
Looking back, that period challenged me in ways I never expected, but it also accelerated my growth professionally and taught me how to leverage my creativity in a much broader capacity.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
What I find most rewarding is seeing an idea that started in my head become something tangible in the real world. Whether it’s a photo, a styled look, or a campaign, there’s something really fulfilling about translating emotion, mood, or inspiration into something others can actually see and feel. I also love that creative work is never static, it constantly pushes me to evolve and see things differently.
