We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Derrius Mallory a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Derrius, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
If I was given the opportunity to change some things about the educational system, I’d like to say three things at minimum:
– Creating better learning paths (curriculum guides) for students.
– Increased funding for schools/teachers.
– More focus leadership/success coaching positions.
I believe that more in-depth focus towards improving these three areas could improve our education system and help prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career. Let’s dive a bit deeper into why!
1. Creating better learning paths (curriculum guides) for students.
Looking back in time towards the ending of the 90’s going into the 2000’s era, to me it seems like schooling system has taken a major shift. From the stories that were passed down through the generations, schools used to place you upon a path to learn the necessary skills/trades while being hands on and now it’s more of a technology based society that allows you to cut corners. I believe it’s a great comparison to the terms of being independent vs. dependent! Both terms are viewed from different POVs and I believe play a key role into the designated learning path for students. Through proper and thorough assessment, I believe each student can become more successful following a path that’s going to work for them.
2. Increased funding for schools and teachers.
It could be argued that there are already teachers in positions at schools now who are ready to or already succeeding beyond what’s expected in regards to helping students on the right path. However, they are not receiving the proper compensation or support for their hard work and it usually leads to them getting burnt out. It could also be the other way around whereas certain teachers are getting paid what’s needed, but the schools lack the necessary resources of what’s needed. The two matter equally in my eyes and is truly something that needs to be corrected. In order for the two to put its best efforts forth, teachers need to feel as if they play a role in which matters and schools need to be a fundamentally sound place where learning needs can be fulfilled.
3. More focus on leadership/success coaches.
With the proper placement of more focus on leadership/success coaches or what was once known as the “guidance counselor”, I see a major shift happening in schools for the better. Increasing and adding enhanced training to these coaching positions can heavily impact a students life. This can be done by way of studying and reviewing the behaviors of a student, evaluating specific strengths/weaknesses, current interest and future goals, plus more that aligns with the natural path in which that student is embarking. These targeted task could help leadership/success coaches relay necessary information to the school advisory/boards and eventually help create a better system of grouping students within the right fields that work best for them.
All in all, the future leaders of our world deserve the best of the best and our educational system needs to make a change! It is imperative that we continue to push forward in making sure they get the proper tools needed to take on all which lies ahead.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am Derrius Mallory, a highly driven marketing specialist, influencer, and community advocate.
For the past 6-8 years I have been blessed to build and grow connections with industries such as Arts & Entertainment, Barbering, Education, Health & Wellness, Music, Sports, etc! Within each industry I’ve been able to amplify my communication skills, demonstrate effect marketing campaigns, and overall learn how to be an asset to those around me.
On my journey of working in these fields, I have learned that it requires a certain mentality to thrive and I believe it’s what sets me apart from those who don’t have it. This specific mentality can be described as being designed to lead effectively while empowering others with the confidence to accomplish what’s ahead of them and/or helping find the necessary tools that help along the way.
Will this always be an easy thing to do? The answer is no. However, trials and tribulations come to all in whatever field you work in, but your mentality and drive determine whether or not you succeed.
Overall, I’m glad to say I have been able to work alongside great mentors, grow with a Fortune 100 company, start my own businesses, and impact other peoples lives thus far! Each part of my journey has allowed me to take on new challenges that I believe will work in my favor to remain strong no matter how hard it gets and one day be a motivational force worldwide.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Most definitely. I thrive off learning the stories of others who went through what some call the “struggle” and finding ways to enhance it by gathering the necessary tools needed to make it successful. This method also allows me to build brand awareness, provide affordable services that are negotiable, and create an environment for those who feel like their story matters.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Great question. Three major things come to mind.. First, I feel like going to college and attending the #1 HBCU (North Carolina A&T State University) allowed me to be exposed to diversity and be placed around a different target audience than I was used to growing up. Second, by simply believing in myself and stepping out on faith in places that may have once been out of my comfort zone. Lastly, bringing forth creative ideas to the table of certain platforms and collaborating with individuals who have the necessary tools to make them come to life.
