We were lucky to catch up with Derrick Whitsett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Derrick , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I’m very happy as a business owner because I know deep down it’s in the industry I chose to be in. It’s my passion to bring stories to life. I have moments when I reconsider getting a salary job when my back can be against the wall financially, especially considering you know that you have a guaranteed paycheck. The last time I thought about giving up on my dream temporarily was actually a few months ago. It was frustrating. Being a business owner can be very emotional because you know every decision you make affects your business.
But then I remember why I wanted to run my own business. I knew that what I believed in would ultimately set me up successfully so that I didn’t have to work at a job I didn’t want.
Derrick , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was bullied in elementary school and often turned my attention to writing. For some strange reason I was able to express my thoughts that way. Once a favorite teacher of mind showed me how I can express my thoughts creatively, was when I truly understood the power of writhing effectively.
The stories created under Myōōzik Entertainment Group are meant to challenge the everyday person on emotional, but compelling storytelling. It’s meant to provoke a change for the better.
I’m very proud of what we do and don’t feel the need to compete with other media groups. There’s room for everyone!
My company is also a small real estate group that specializes in renters, first-time home buyers, commercial properties, and more. My goal was to help working class people find something that “feeds their soul” rather than a dream property.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I grew my audience organically. At first I didn’t want to be on camera and would walk around taking videos or pictures of my books and properties.
It wasn’t until I posted a video of me talking over the video, sometimes in the video, did I notice people actually listen to me.. The best advice I would give is know your audience and what makes you different. Don’t try to be like anyone else because the audience can tell.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes. There’s one book called 7 habits of highly effective people. Now I’m not going to tell you why. You read it. I can guarantee it’s a book that will challenge conventional thinking.
