We were lucky to catch up with Derrick Shorter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Derrick, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
I always feel that my work is misunderstood. I have also come to realize that I am okay with that, simply because I realize that I don’t create for people to understand at surface level. A good example of this is me telling people that I am not only a producer, but an artist as well. People usually do either or; make beats or rap/sing. I do both and that is not something people are used to.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am an artist/producer from Michigan. I have been making music for over 10+ years now. My mother is a DJ & my father was a producer, so music is in my blood. I also am an audio engineer, so I know how to record, mix & master my own songs & other people’s songs. I think the thing that separates me from everyone else is that my sound is something that’s rare. Granted a majority of my songs are samples, but I love distorting & manipulating the sample so it sounds almost unrecognizable.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The feeling of finishing a record/project that you’ve put so much time & effort into.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My father passed in 2021, and though I have been doing music since I was a kid, it became more meaningful to me once he passed on.
