We recently connected with Derrick Brantley and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, thanks for joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.

I started my business out of the back of my car. I spent many hours a week educating people about what I did since no one knew. I struggled working in the medical field since I was not recognized for what I was doing and was not making a livable wage. After alot of hard work I managed to get an office of my own in Lake Mary.

Derrick, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I specialize in treating chronic pain. It is sort of a dig and drag technique against bones to stimulate an inflammation response. This response essentially reprogrammes the nervous system to shut off pain receptors. Treatment is done over clothing using pressure and movement techniques. Sessions are rather uncomfortable, since pain receptors need to be directly stimulated to turn them off. After a day or two of onset soreness, the pain usually dissipates followed by releif. Most clients need 3 to 8 sessions to achieve desired results.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

Word of mouth

For such a niche product like I have, people need to be educated about it. I ask my clients to refer their friends and family as well as introductions to their medical professionals. I offered free demos to referral sources such as chiros and other massage therapists to get referrals.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

I started my business from nothing. It took almost three years to be able to pay myself a decent salary. All the money I made went back into the business for growth. Most people are not willing to make that sacrifice.
