Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Derik Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Derik, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Yes, it has been a long and obstacle ridden journey, starting from when I first got Inspired to pursue a creative field. I first held a camera in a creative role when I was in college, working as a video producer for a summer camp. It was a role that was randomly sprung on me because they needed someone to do it. That happenstance started my love for photography and videography. I learned as much as I could and made what I thought at the time to be masterpieces (oh to be as confident as I was back then). After my short time there, it was back to normal living, retail jobs and the like, your typical college experience. After trying to learn as much as I could, I finally decided to branch out and pursue photography and audio engineering (my major in college) of my own accord. It has been difficult, and certainly a major financial and time investment, but finally paid off when I secured a full time job at a production company, and doing additional film & creative projects on the side.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Photographer and Audio engineer, having done it as a hobby, part time job, and full time job for over 5 years now, I know the ropes well enough to be an addition on most projects that people have, and I love working with people.
I’m generally known as an audio engineer for live events, short films, and street & stylized portrait photographer.
I’m most proud of the friends & connections I’ve made along my journey.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Interestingly enough, my presence on social media gained popularity off of just having fun. I posted a few fun and comedic videos that gained a bit of popularity, and found that the best way to do social media is to not overthink it. Share your passion in a way that is relatable and entertaining to people, and you will grow.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have always been a dreamer, I can’t really seem to accept the Monday-Friday 9-5 thing. Corporate America has a tight grip and it’s never really interested me to follow that path. I want to have flexibility, to live life the best way possible, and while some people think it’s odd or irresponsible to hold that view, I’ve accepted that working hard for myself and growing my livelihood that way I’d much more fulfilling for me.
