We were lucky to catch up with Derek Montgomery recently and have shared our conversation below.
Derek, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I’m Derek Dominique, A Music Artist/Songwriter From Houston Texas. I Grew Up In Neighborhood Called ‘Herschelwood’ and that’s where my music journey began. I was all the school talent shows and church talent shows growing up. My love for music started from my mama(Patricia Montgomery) she was always into music and played Body And Soul Cassette Tapes Every Day In The House. I would perform for her and my family and she always pushed me to be a music artist. My older cousin Dionne was in love with Tupac and usher as a kid and she would play their music at high volume at my granny house lol. My first time I ever heard myself on a song was my 7th grade year at Attucks Middle School!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My first project I released was in 2008. I learned a lot about music from 2 Different Houston Producers. FM and Bando. They taught me how to record and mix myself so I wouldn’t have to pay for studio time lol. I then became a songwriter and an engineer for pop, hip hop R&B and indie alternative artist. Currently I am most proud of getting being a musical composer for the movie ‘A New Life’ That Will soon be on Netflix. I also had one of my singles play on Cartoon Network, I’ve been featured of numerous magazines, music played the Las Vegas Golden Knights Hocket Game and Music Played on different radio stations across the country!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What help me build my reputation within my market is my turnaround rate. I get music done fairly easy and soon. People trust me because I’m effective and efficient. I also feel word a mouth helps build my reputation.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I never had to pivot from my career but I had get a job to help substation with bills and my music career. Most artist have such hug egos that they feel less of a creative by getting a job. I always tell artist never let your ego stop you from helping yourself.
