We recently connected with Derek Floyd and have shared our conversation below.
Derek , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
The term parent is a very loose term for me. Upon my life path, I have met a lot of individuals that have impacted me and played their roles at certain times, coaches, my foster parents, and when I finally moved in with my mom. In the foster home, I can remember them always being passionate about what they do. My mom being a single parent raising four boys she would always hustle. There were days when growing up when we didn’t know what we were going to eat but my mom always made it happen. That played a huge impact in my life and my business I work extremely hard and that’s what keeps me going remembering the bad times more than the good, and knowing that I have to grind. The discipline from my coaches when playing sports throughout my life, playing football in college turned me into the man I am today.
Derek , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Honestly, me being frugal when I got my first place. I didn’t want to pay someone to come into my house to mount my tv so I just started experimenting. For the first couple of months, I was doing work for friends and family. In 2019 I decided to see if I could make this a business, at the time I was working for Dallas County. In my first month, I made $1300, which wasn’t bad a nice little side hustle. I started off just doing tv mounts and progressed into in-home media installations, security systems, chandeliers, an all-around handyman. Bringing my client’s visions to life of how they want their home set up really fuels my passion for my work. What sets my business apart from others, I am efficient with my work, and I like to get in and get out while still providing the best service. I have built this from a hobby to a full-blown business. Being able to help and support my family and loved ones is the biggest accomplishment that my business has provided.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Good work sells its-self if I continue to put out good quality work. I will continue to build clientele. Word of mouth has really skyrocketed my business.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Finally leaving my 9-5, my first real job outside of college. Taking the leap and putting 100% into my business. I met a client who owned a business and they were doing so well for themselves that they gave me some advice: they sat down for six months and took their craft seriously. Those words really changed the game for me and I implemented that into my career.
