We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Derek Douglas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Derek, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’m incredibly proud to share my most recent project, which delves deep into my life journey. Growing up in Nashville amidst the rich tapestry of 90s country, rap, and rock music, I was profoundly influenced by my father, a talented country singer and entertainer. Despite facing adversity within a financially struggling family and being drawn into a life of crime and recklessness, I discovered my talent for rap, a turning point in my life.
However, everything changed with the passing of my father. It ignited a desire to reconnect with my roots, leading me back to my love for singing country music. This project holds immense significance as it’s a tribute to my father’s legacy, showcasing all facets of my talent to the world while authentically portraying my journey—from hardship to self-discovery.
What sets this project apart is its message. It’s not just about music; it’s about resilience, redemption, and the power of overcoming challenges. I’m proud that my music doesn’t glorify negative aspects like drugs, sex, or violence, and I’ve chosen to express myself without using profanity. This project is a reflection of who I am, where I come from, and the belief that as humans, we can conquer anything life throws our way.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Derek Wayne Douglas, born and raised in Nashville, and my musical journey mirrors the city’s diversity and challenges. Surrounded by a family of musicians, I found solace in music amid a tumultuous upbringing. Influenced by 80s and 90s country, southern rock, and rap, my musical style evolved, drawing from artists like Triple Six Mafia and Tupac.
Struggling through drugs, crime, and incarceration, a move to Florida sparked my interest in beat-making and music production. Despite setbacks, returning to Tennessee reignited my passion, especially after losing my father. This loss pushed me to embrace singing alongside rapping, creating a unique blend of hip-hop and country.
My recent project is deeply personal, honoring my father’s legacy and showcasing my diverse talents. It’s a testament to my journey of redemption and self-discovery, reflecting on my roots, struggles, and growth. Through my music, I aim to inspire others and highlight the transformative power of music and resilience.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely, there is a profound mission driving my creative journey. Growing up in a challenging environment, marked by abandonment, struggles with faith, and rebellious phases, I found myself navigating through dark moments of doubt and despair. Yet, amidst it all, I felt a guiding presence, a sense that there was a greater plan at play.
This realization led me to understand the power of love, kindness, and coexistence. Despite our differences and complexities, at the core, we are all capable of compassion and understanding. My goal is to spread this message of love and unity through my music, reminding people that we are all more capable and connected than we often realize. It’s about simplifying the essence of life, focusing on kindness, and embracing each other harmoniously, just as God intended in his message of love and understanding.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative, for me, is the profound connection with people that my work fosters. It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness someone singing along to my songs, especially when it’s children who are touched by the music. Hearing from listeners who share how a song of mine resonated with them, whether it brought them to tears during a tough time or added joy to a great moment, is immensely gratifying.
Creating music that is authentically me, coming straight from the heart, is a deeply emotional experience. The goosebumps and almost-tears when I finish a song that truly reflects who I am and what I want to express are moments of pure authenticity.
Ultimately, I aspire for my music to not only touch people’s hearts but also to be a significant source of income for me. I dream of performing in front of large audiences, sharing my passion and connecting with people on a grand scale through the power of music.
