Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Derail Howery. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Derail, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
How did you learn to do what you do?
I’m an artist. Ill probably label myself as an storyteller. I’ve been drawing and sketching probably at the age of 6, if I can remember. My uncle was a big help in my artist growth . I remember in eight grade I thought I was the best artist at the school because I was pass the torch from artist that graduated last year. One day a transfer student came in and he was dope, blew me out the water and it show me that there are people are better than you. In high school I didn’t take it that serious because I was playing sports and stuff. I when I graduated from high school, I didn’t get no scholar ship or anything to play basketball so I went to an junior college and took some art classes and I felt in love again with art. I went to an art school call AI ( Illinois institute of art of Chicago ) and major in computer animation and graduated with a B.A.. In College of AI I made a good friend ship with Robin Rios and she ask me to come to check out the 4art Gallery and I fell in love with the art gallery and for what it stand for.
Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
I sit back everyday thinking If I could speed up my learning process. I wouldn’t change anything because living on this earth, life experiences had made me to who I am. I use to think if I didn’t play basketball in high school maybe I might be an different artist but I stop thinking about that because sports help me to be competitive and focus and built up a skill just like art, practice and practice until I get it right.
What skills I think are the most essential?
for me the skill I built up is able to watch movies and been able to brake down shots and applying it into a comic book story in panel. Trying to observe life around me and being able to tell a story from my experience.
What obstacles stood in the way of learning?
Life is the biggest obstacles and I still deal with that every single day. Life can be Tough and heartless but I having let it stop me from learning

I use traditional mediums pencil, paper, maker, dipping ink pens, water colors, colors pencils. digital mediums, Photoshop, clip studio, procreate , sketch book pro. Now I’m starting to do oil painting as well. I also write poetry when I have the time.
