We were lucky to catch up with De’Qustay Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
De’Qustay, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
One of the biggest risks I have taken was leaving both of my jobs to focus on my business full-time. This was one of the scariest moves I have ever made. But it also was one of the most fulfilling things I could have ever done for myself and for my business. This has taught me there are no limits to what I can do if I work really hard and put my mind to something!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I currently run my own mobile bartending business called “Mobile Bar ATL.” We specialize in special events. Mobile Bar ATL is a luxury bartending service that services private cocktail/mocktail needs for any and every occasion. I got into this industry being in the food service for many years. I eventually transition into bar tendering. I would have guest asking if I did events outside of my job and that is how my business was born. I started taking private bookings and this is how Mobile Bar ATL was born (formally known as De’QustayJ Cocktails!) The thing I am most proud of is my drive! I have given so much to my craft and I continue to push even harder with every passing day. Customer service has been such a huge part of my life and career. So quite naturally, “exceeding customer satisfaction is our top priority!!!”
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One hard lesson I had to unlearn is that friends and business absolutely does not mix. As bad as we want to help and take care of those, we love no one is going to treat or handle your baby the way you do. It is truly better to seek outside help! I have tried numerous times and have fallen short almost every time. “Lesson well learned!!!!!!”
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source for new clients would have to marketing, referrals, and the power of social media. Keeping a great rapport with clients, and with followers are essential. I make it a habit to exceed all my client experiences. So, with comes more bookings. Social media is very important. I make sure to create and post content daily to pull in my audience which leads to engagement and future bookings. It is very important to find new and innovative ways to market yourself and your brand.
