Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dequann Piner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
DeQuann, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In order to become successful at anything you want in life, you must be a believer, achiever, dreamer, a manifester, & fail a bunch of times. If you believe in yourself, you have already done the hardest part: people will always come and go, but what you decide to do during your journey is all up to you, 10 years ago I was enrolled in culinary school, and I didn’t know that when I graduated I was not guaranteed a “chef” job, but that didn’t stop me, I had a 5 year plan, I had alot of down time, and most of all I had to make a move in order to finish what I started, here we are 10 years later and I am proud to say I am officially an EXECUTIVE CHEF. It took me 10 years to get here but I am proud of myself for not giving up and sticking it out through this difficult industry.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well first things first, I am just a traveling chef, but besides that I am a diverse music producer, aspiring actor, and monitized YouTuber. With all these titles I have accumulated over the years, my business is like a brand now, when I’m cooking up a chef special, I’m always giving my 110%, whenever i’m making a beat I always listen to it over and over, before I’m ready to share with the world, whenever I do a vlog/video for my YouTube channel, its always planned ahead of time and edited to my best before uploading for the whole world to see. And last but not least: my acting career, for years I was always told that I have a good sense of humor, and that “i’m very funny” so I had to figure out something to do about it, I decided during the pandemic when I was locked away in my room in 2020, to start my acting career, although I didn’t see results right away, i’m so proud of myself for starting it when I did, this was a perfect opportunity to get to know myself better and figure out what is so different about me, I am definitely one of a kind, with all the accomplishments I have and adventures i’ve taken in life, I am thankful for all the experiences that have happened to me on my success journey. I would say I am always down to give any opportunity a chance and I encourage anyone in life to do the same, often times we expect the worst or best to happen, but sometimes when it does happen what’s next? Do you dwell on the mistake forever, or do you learn from it and do better? I have learned from majority of my mistakes, but I will always make the right decision. I will say I am most proud of myself for continuing to keep pushing through any challenges I faced, if I take a L, just know I took it in silence and I bounced back, i’ll never let a setback define my personality. To all my readers, fans, followers or clients, I just want to say thank you for always believing in me and supporting me this is my 6th edition and I am grateful and humbled to continue to tell my story and hope I am inspiring someone to live up to their dreams and potential.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Most definitely starting a YouTube channel was a great way to build my reputation and brand up off the ground, originally starting off as a channel to vlog cooking competitions for my job in Wyoming, it turned into my lifestyle on camera: I upload never before heard beats, concerts that I have attended, I practiced monologues for movies on camera, I have story times on life changing experiences and I have even connected with a few other creators and companies and we have done many collaborations. In 2023 my friends invited me to Las Vegas during Super Bowl weekend, all because I invited them to my Christmas party, I never been to Las Vegas, and the timing was perfect, I had just moved to Colorado for the winter as a traveling chef, and I was in a new part of town and I discovered some individuals close to my age, with a language barrier but I understood them enough to help them out & we instantly became social media friends & work friends, they wanted to party with me outside of work and that video on my YouTube channel has over 1 thousand views and it was arguably the best weekend of my entire life, not only did we enjoy the super bowl show, we bonded over cultures and got to walk the big strip for 4 days and our jobs allowed it. Ever since this adventure I noticed, my YouTube channel has thrived and my audience is growing, I cannot thank my friends enough for thinking of me and tagging me along on this trip.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Anytime you are responsible for others as well as yourself, its so important to lead by example and understanding the importance of first impression, a first impression is always your LAST impression, you have no idea if you are ever going to be in that same position/ situation again so its very important to be friendly, helpful, understanding and also stern when necessary. I think my energy is so important, when you are working its best to always let work life, personal life, and social life be where they are located best, I don’t ever remember a time I didn’t leave a job without giving a proper notice, or a time I didn’t leave a job without building connections, its important to always have a support system wherever you go, I can honestly say my support system has helped me in so many ways and it has made my road to success so smooth.
