We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deon Abdullah. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deon below.
Deon , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission is simple, but it’s been a deeply complex and collaborative journey. I’m focused on spreading health and wellness, not just as an individual effort, but as a collective movement. My work centers on building community and fostering engagement in holistic healing and overall well-being. By combining my expertise in sports massage, group training, and fitness instruction with the knowledge of countless other health practitioners, I aim to break down the barriers to health literacy and access, making wellness more inclusive for everyone.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a Sports Massage International Champion, a nationally recognized MixxedFit instructor, and an ambassador for the Emerald City Athletics Champions group fitness platform. My journey in holistic care began during my time in the military, where, although I specialized as a military police officer, I earned my EMT license and became involved in emergency medical services. It was through this experience that I recognized the power of preventative care as a proactive approach to community health. This inspired me to build a community centered around health and wellness.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One important lesson I had to unlearn is that once you have a vision, don’t let anyone make you doubt it. In my experience, my vision has evolved and flourished through the ideas and experiences of others. It’s like creating a mental gumbo, where different perspectives blend together. This can dramatically reshape your initial vision by opening up new avenues of thought. So, while it’s important to stay confident and grounded in your mission, remain flexible in your approach. That balance will help you bring your vision to life in the most productive way.

Any advice for managing a team?
The best advice I can give to anyone building and maintaining a team is to start with a clear understanding of your mission. It’s crucial to know the culture that needs to be embraced and the roles that need to be filled for effective execution of daily operations. Once you have a grasp on the culture, you can align personalities and match the right skills to the right positions. This approach ensures that each person is in a role where they can truly thrive, leading to authentic fulfillment and success for the team
