We were lucky to catch up with Denzelle Simmons recently and have shared our conversation below.

Denzelle , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.

When I was 9 years old my Older brother wrote my first rap and gave my my first rap name lil Denz

Influenced by lil Wayne because he was only 11 when he started rapping for cash money.

Watching some of the greatest artists to ever do it on tv over the course of my childhood I wanted to be just like them . Performing at my family reunion at 10 years old was the first moment I noticed what my dream would be and now I’m living it my own way

Denzelle , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I’ve been a student of hip hop my whole life, I wasn’t good at anything else but writing and creating music. Since 2003 I’ve written over 10000 verses . I’m currently an independent artist with One Shot Entertainment And I own my publishing rights .

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

Having creative control over your art is important to me. Having the ability to express myself by being myself helped me be more open to my audience and allows the audience to gravitate towards me organically. I am nothing without my creativity

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?

More networking opportunities could be valuable towards helping artists connect and collaborate. And more opportunities for local artists to perform and get paid
