We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Denzel Hill. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Denzel below.
Denzel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In a way, moving to Savannah was a risk. I was offered a job that casted a great vision of longevity and my overall career development, yet it did not go as planned. In hindsight, there were plenty of unknown factors that I should have taken into account when considering my relocation from Maryland. I could have taken more time to understand the town that I was moving to, who I was set to work for, and develop a strategy that would allow for professional agility in case of unexpected happenstances. I ultimately stepped out on faith that my skillset, personality and my support & guidance from my family would come together to generate the necessary rhythm needed to succeed. My experience thus far has provided me with wisdom that I am thankful for. The risk taken in moving down here created a healthy pressure to develop this knowing, and the momentum is continuing to build, one day at a time.
Denzel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am rooted in my knowledge of God, spirituality, and an intuition that helps guide me along my path in life. My mother, father, older brother, along with my dog Taz are the important supportive forces in my life. I also want to mention my girlfriend who has been an amazing force that mirrors and supports my creativity through her wits as a marketing visionary.
As I maneuvered through my early life of academics and athletics, my parents were always there—my dad filmed just about every event that I competed in, and my mom was often the loudest in the stands, cheering me on, all while encouraging astuteness within the classroom. They worked diligently together to get the exposure I needed to be recruited and eventually I found myself at Columbia University in the City of New York, playing football and maneuvering through an architecture program. No matter the distance, they traveled to get me to where I needed to be, and that includes just about every game at Columbia, whether home or away. I had an achilles injury that ended my college career which was a major defining moment in my life. My family was there every step of the way providing me the safe space to recover and rediscover my path into my next phase of life. Through it all I have developed a dedication to my wellness and overall habits for cultivating my creative talents. I am an architectural design professional that has aim to bridge the gap between the built world and nature for healthier communities. I am in the process of helping establish food secure environments and I believe that architects should start looking in this direction to magnify their impact. Imagine a home that grows food, or better yet…a four story multifamily complex that features design elements that grow food. Could you imagine living at a place like that? Thats the Under One Sun way, I suppose.
I have full intention on enrolling in SCAD as an IPAL(Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure) candidate come Fall of 2025 to thoroughly flesh out my ideas and to ultimately become a licensed architectural professional. Thankfully, I won’t have a full time football schedule to balance with school, allowing me to focus upon my desire of developing my ideas into tomorrow’s built world.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Expect to feel empowered when working with me. I strive to collaborate and generate a mastermind connection between the parties involved in the given project. Having a mastermind connection means that we develop a common goal in each of our minds that comes together to encourage harmony within the process. This creates effective communication habits, thus making the ideas generated towards the deliverables quality assured by all parties. This mindset has been highly effective, as I am able to show up each day with the proper solution-based mindset that it takes to be a creative professional. Unknown factors are bound to arise, so this meditated attitude for my craft and collaboration creates a high level of service that Under One Sun Creative Consulting provides.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My history as a student athlete built resilience within the foundation of my personality. There have been many instances where I was dealing with an injury/failure in sports and still had to go about my days in school. I learned how to perceive failures as lessons for me to become better as an overall human being. Resilience has been essential for me in fortifying my purpose and staying the course towards finding my fit as an architectural designer in Savannah. I’ve developed a true love for this disciplined and resilient process, and from this I can expect success.
