We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Denytria Harley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Denytria below.
Hi Denytria, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I started my cosmetics business, Flawless by Queen D LLC, on Juneteenth! That day is monumental for people of African descent so it felt right to launch my website on that day. I truly do wish I’d had been in the headspace to start this journey sooner. I’m a giving/nurturing person. I often times put others before myself. I sacrificed a lot in my 20’s and had to find myself again once I turned 30. I finally let go of things and people that no longer served me. Finally, I put myself first and found a support system that pushed me to a greater destiny and allowed me to be all that I am! I have ALWAYS been a Lover of the Arts! I enjoy all things artistic so it was only right that I start a business that I’m passionate about. I do feel that I started my business at the right time although I wish it had been sooner. I’m in a better position in my life right now and I am able to truly focus on growing my business into everything I have envisioned for it. I would not have been able to do so 5-10 years ago. I believe everything happens for a reason and in due time what’s meant to be will be.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Flawless by Queen D was founded and established in June 2022 in Minnesota! We cater to anyone looking to enhance their beauty. We offer Liquid Matte Lipsticks in a variety of colors which are Water/Transfer/Smudge Proof, Lipglosses, Automatic Brow Pencils, Brown & Black Mink Lashes, Faux Mink Lashes, & Colored Glitter Lashes. Our CEO better known as Queen also provides Makeup Services ranging from Natural to Full Glam and 1on1 tutorials (in-person or via video conference). I consider myself a makeup enthusiast turned artist. I began my journey in the beauty industry in 2020 during the peak of COVID-19 where I had a lot of downtime. I began watching makeup tutorials on YouTube & Snapchat then started practicing on myself. From there I started taking photos & videos and created targeted social media profiles geared toward my makeup artistry. I’m the BIGGEST Beyoncé fan so it was only right that I was given the nickname Queen D. I wanted a catchy name that flowed and spoke to what my artistry represented so immediately Flawless came to mind (Sidenote: For those that don’t know Queen Bey has a song titled ***Flawless lol) Everything about my brand focuses on quality, uniqueness, and beauty. Every person should feel and be treated like a King or Queen. You ARE the hierarchy! You rule your Queendom or Kingdom. My business is black-female-lgbtq-owned. I’m proud of the woman I am and what I represent. I always say I’m a walking billboard. Being relatable and personable are important qualities in business. I want my customers and followers to see who I am and know that they will receive quality products and content at all times!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’m definitely still building my brand, my following & getting my name to be recognized. I currently have 3000+ followers on FB, 1100+ on IG, & 700+ on TikTok. It’s all about networking. I do a lot of collaborations in the makeup industry (creating theme looks) and I also PR for other small business brands who then reshare my content I create with their products which often times results in their customers following me. You have to post consistently (preferably original content) to be seen with how the algorithm on these platforms are setup. Often times strangers are going to be your best customers so you have to constantly show off your products and show them how they could be as FLAWLESS as you are! Being Authentic, Relatable, Inspiring, Educational, and Entertaining is how you get the views and shares!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I participate in monthly local vendor events (pop-up shops) and that has definitely helped me to get new customers. Being an online retailer there’s only so many videos and photos you can upload to show off your merchandise but at these vendor events people are able to touch the product and try on the various shades to find the perfect one! Everyone loves a try before you buy. Ads have not been as effective with gaining new customers but i do believe advertising on social media is important!
