Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Denver Hull. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Denver, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?

I don’t take vacations, I never have. I’m doing what I enjoy doing, and I don’t feel any need to get away from it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I was a systems engineer, or similar, for the majority of my career. It was work that was challenging and satisfying. When I got laid off in my mid 50’s, I decided to try something a little different, and after considering a variety of options I decided on custom CNC routing. That seemed like a reasonable choice, and as far as I could tell, there weren’t very many people offering that kind of service in my area. And I like making things.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Attention to detail, doing what my customers want, not what I think they want or should want. If something isn’t clear about an order, I don’t guess, I ask. It’s often the little things that can make a big difference. I did a job involving a large number of carved trail marker posts that were all different. As I finished each one and stacked it on the pallet I marked the end to identify it.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

I made a list of the kinds of businesses that might be interested in my work, then expanded that list by adding contact information for businesses in each of those categories. Then I started making phone calls, setting up appointments, and bringing samples that I thought would be interesting for someone in that category. I brought sign samples to sign companies, molding samples to building contractors, etc.
