Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dennis Trochez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dennis, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I went from barely passing english class to getting paid to write songs for people
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was feeling lost at an unfulfilling day job and my coworker recommended me going to her small music school. I decided to try it and signed up. By the 3rd songwriting class I knew this was it. It was done before it was done. Not many things in life that you decide are life long decisions other than marriage. I’ve been at it ever since. I’m most proud of seeing the growth in an artist. The ability to help them tap directly into their truth and who they are. Theres nothing better than that.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I watch a lot of Rick Rubin videos. He has a knack for simplicity and I believe that is where the genius lies. He’s been able to put words to the feelings of creation that helped me understand what was going on when I created something that didnt exist before. It’s all about keeping your antennas up.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I first started making music, I had zero understanding of it. I was highly critical of music but I didnt understand the underlying information about it. So i took one songwriting class and knew it was it. I was off to the races. So I taught myself how to work the recording program Logic, which was like learning a new language. I taught myself to how to record and what equipment I needed. I didnt have a microphone so I used to record ideas into Logic through my beats by dre headphones. The quality was absolutely terrible but I could record ideas. Once I was able to get a $90 mic, I would use my beanie as a pop filter because I didnt have that either. No matter what the obstacle was, I was gonna figure out a way to make it work.
