We recently connected with Dennis Mailu and have shared our conversation below.
Dennis , appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Learning about acting is multifaceted and I gained my skills through training and experience. Now I understand that It is a delicate tightrope that requires bringing theory to application simultaneously. The skills of acting that are crucial include voice and speech, physical acting, dialect training, and improv etc. I realized quickly that the business of acting is completely different from the craft principles but a necessity to grasp. Combining these elements will bring out the most effective outcome.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born and raised in Nairobi Kenya where I grew up engaging in acting and dance sharpening my skill of self expression. Prior to attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and living in Los Angeles, I completed my college studies in the United Kingdom where i interacted with persons of different nationalities and diverse cultures-a period when I continued to perform and attend screen acting classes. These experiences gave me a broader outlook on human life, storytelling and emotion. Since then, I been involved in various projects including Amazon Prime TV movie Blue Light Melody as well as award winning and nominated short films The Spell That Backfired, RAW and PREY.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The main mission driving my creative journey is the discovery of self and human connection. Living as an actor gives you the opportunity to be vulnerable and illuminate aspects of characters through points of view/perspectives that you have within yourself to the world. To succeed in this task it is imperative to understand yourself fully, only then can you inspire others through your message.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There are a few books that I recommend to channel insight into mental fortitude, power of imagination and the law of assumption. As a creative you have to be a visionary and absorbing lessons from gurus in that field extend that trend of thought. They include Awakened Imagination by Neville Goddard, Becoming Supernatural by Joe Dispenza and Stillness Speaks by Eckhart Tolle.
