Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dennis J. West. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dennis J. , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I entered the publishing and production industries by accident, drawing on my background as a personal talent manager. My journey began when I signed a multi-talented artist who wrote books, stageplays, and songs. Upon signing our contract, she revealed that she needed immediate help publishing a newly written book and producing one of her stageplays. At the time, I had absolutely no experience in book publishing. However, I utilized my network and connected with a college professor who headed an English department; she agreed to edit and proofread the manuscript. From there, I applied my core knowledge of marketing and sales to the launch. The project was a massive success, ultimately becoming one of her highest-selling books. For the stageplay, I leveraged my extensive background in the music business. I approached the production exactly like a live concert, applying the same promotional strategies to the theater framework. The show completely sold out. With those two successful ventures, my career in publishing and production officially took off.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Formative Years and Early EntrepreneurshipMy entrepreneurial journey and leadership instincts began during my childhood in a government housing project. Raised by a hardworking single mother who successfully brought up six children, I learned the value of work ethic early.Even as a child, I was naturally an organizer. Whether leading my brothers and neighborhood friends as we pretended to be the Jackson 5 or The Temptations, or launching my first business, I stepped into management roles. In our neighborhood, I started a lawn care service. Instead of just cutting grass myself, I scaled the operation. I purchased the lawnmowers, funded the gasoline, and hired other local youth to do the labor. I managed the logistics, secured the jobs, and provided the equipment. For every $2.00 lawn service, I paid the workers $0.50 and kept $1.50 for expenses and profit, learning the fundamentals of business operations and delegation at a young age.Corporate Success and MilestonesAt 14 years old, I secured my first job with a major fast-food chain. Through dedication, I quickly climbed the corporate ladder. This career eventually led me across the nation and to various parts of the world. Because of this early hard work, I achieved one of my proudest milestones: becoming a homeowner and property owner at a very young age.Passion Projects and WritingAlongside my corporate career, I fell in love with Karate. I eventually acquired a chain of Karate schools and personally promoted 10 individuals to the rank of Black Belt. Throughout all of these journeys, I maintained a habit of daily journaling. Documenting my life experiences and business ventures every day is ultimately what naturally transitioned me into writing.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my life is sharing my story and discovering how we are all connected. This connection goes beyond blood or physical traits; it is deeply social and spiritual. No matter where I travel or who I speak with, I find relatable common ground in every person and every story. This journey continuously allows me to connect with people from all walks of life. The most empowering part of this path is that I write my own story and control my own time. In my opinion, time is our most precious commodity. Once it is spent, you can never get it back, so I strive to use mine as wisely as possible. While many people say “time is money,” I view it differently. I value my time above all else, so I have learned to put my money to work for me instead, letting it do exactly what it is supposed to do: multiply.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my opinion, the American educational system requires a fundamental overhaul to make our children competitive in the modern global marketplace. The traditional model is no longer sufficient. To truly prepare students for success, we should implement five core reforms:Year-Round Schooling: Transition to a year-round calendar paired with frequent, well-spaced breaks to prevent learning loss.Mandatory Second Language: Require proficiency in a second language as a prerequisite for high school graduation.Comprehensive Financial Literacy: Integrate mandatory financial education so every student understands budgeting, investing, and wealth building.Customized Career Pathways: Tailor high school curricula to a student’s specific career goals—whether they want to be a writer, a musician, or an entrepreneur—providing a clear path to their chosen industry.Free Higher Education: Make all post-secondary education completely tuition-free, ensuring that further learning is accessible to anyone looking to expand their
