We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Denitra Townsend Gregory a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Denitra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of my business, Unforgettable YOU, was designed surrounding the pressure that outside influences can have on an individual. I wanted to always remind my clients to keep who they are in the forefront, regardless to what society says they should be. It serves as a constant nudge to stand firm and shameless about who YOU are and HOW YOU are YOU.
Denitra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a proud wife of almost 5 years and I find myself balancing being a great wife, daughter, sister, friend, and community and church leader. As a little girl, I always loved exploring new interests in arts and academia and although those interests were strong, I went the traditional route and attended college and received my Bachelor Degree in Human Services specializing in social work and mental health. However, there’s always been a tug toward style, beauty and empowerment, so while working in the human services field, I honed in on turning that tug into something “official.” I actually started Unforgettable YOU while working a full-time job and a few years prior to my departure from that industry, I went to cosmetology school and got my Cosmetology License. So not only was I versed in developing an Image Consulting business, but I became qualified in beauty (hair & skin care and manicuring) industry. This satisfied my desire to learn and work with individuals (in some way) in a more person-centered approach. Unforgettable YOU is an Image Consulting company that specializes in appearance management, wardrobe styling, personal shopping, color psychology, beauty consultancy, and most recently, capsule wardrobe and upcycle designer. Currently the company retains the majority of clients in the political, corporate, non-profit and creative spaces.
The newest offering; wardrobe and upcycle design comes after the recent completion of an Industrial Sewing and Innovation Center program (now a certified sewing operator) and my desire to educate and create more space for sustainability in my business and in my and my clients’ lives.
I am proud (and this also sets me apart) that I’ve managed to continuously sit in my conviction that IMAGE and STYLE is more meaningful than fashion. I’ve aligned my business in this conviction, no matter what. I also offer more than styling. I offer empowerment and a “whole person” perspective which is informed by my mental health education and experience.
Outside of my business, I contract my services with theatre (mainly Detroit Opera House) and film seasonally.
Additionally, I am a content creator sharing behind the scenes segments for my business, tips, etc. and several retail and lifestyle brands

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pandemic actually helped me to develop tools and practices to work smarter, not harder. I now mostly work with clients who retain my services on a consistent basis. The tools and methods have allowed me to transition from “one and done” to long-term clients. The pandemic allowed me the time to refocus and pivot precisely in the direction that I’ve always desired. Thusly, my work has evolved into lifestyle management that not only involves appearance maintenance, but also the evidence that the success of personal and professional development is directed connected to IMAGE and vice versa.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele has been the power of experience and reputation marketing. Eighty-percent of my current clientele is the result of them hearing about my business through a person who has experienced my brand.
