We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Denisse Urbina Ledezma. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Denisse below.
Alright, Denisse thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The biggest risk of all was when I decided to ask my husband to come and join me in my profession. He worked in Demolition all of his life since he was 18, He worked nights so I couldn’t depend on his time, and He had just finished his classes and got his HVAC License a few months ago so he was ready to start with his new career. At the same time I was going crazy with a lot of appointments and new clientele coming in, to me it felt like i couldn’t handle it anymore. I looked for recent graduates in schools and I was willing to train but nobody was interested in my profession. I hire 1 lady but we needed more techs. So one night talking to my husband I said: I have been seeing you struggling getting clients and also there is a lot of competition out there in the Air Conditioning Field. You want to join me first as a my Assistant if you like it you can enroll in school and get licensed. I wanted him to experience the great impact we make on clients. After a week working for me he said: I want to this I am willing to get licensed. I knew is was going to be challenging for us but we could make it happen. To me everything is possible! He is almost finished with school and so far he is loving it! We keep growing we added another person to our team so far its 4 of us!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I became a Cosmetologist in 2011 and I had no idea that the Medical Field existed. I did everything from nails, lash extensions, body wax, hair etc, I did it because i was Licensed not because I love it. I was working at a nail salon in 2017. I had become a trainer just a couple of months after getting hired and one day one of my trainees told me, I think you are over qualified to be here! You should be working with a Podiatrist. I asked how ? She Replied : Upload your resume on Indeed I know some one out there is looking for some like you! I did and sure one month later a Podiatrist Office contacted me! I worked for them for 3 years (2017-2020) that is how i became Certified Advanced Nail Technician, Certified Medical Nail Technician and Podiatrist Assistant and currently enrolled in college to obtain my master in Science to become a Podiatrist. Currently my establishment serves and helps clients with problematic feet and nails. We help Diabetics, Disable Clients, Veterans, Fungal Nails, Light Ingrown nails. etc. We are highly trained to perform Clinical Pedicures. We have clients from all the US that travel to get our specialized services. We are growing and we are expanding! I want to have small offices all over to be able to take care of every one that needs us! Feet care is not known as a priority until a problem is developed. We educate our clients on foot care in all aspects from how to cut your nails to what is the ideal shoe! And if we cannot help we refer them to the right specialist.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I had always had in my mind that your work represents you out there! It has been my priority to take care of clients and give the best of my skills all the time. It does not matter if it’s a returning client or a new client you will get the best of us in every visit. Taking our before and after pictures gives new clientele an idea of the high quality service you are getting if you visit us. We explain and take our time with each service. We do not rush! A huge clientele comes from mouth to mouth recommendations and also social media has been in our favor.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
YES, YES and YES! I have learned that there are only a few of us who really love to take care of these client necessities. I am becoming a Podiatrist that is my priority now! I want to be able to take care of all the feet and nail needs for patients. If I only knew how needed this profession was back then I would have finished my career already.
