We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Denisse Ojeda. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Denisse below.
Hi Denisse, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
It’s been a journey to get to where I am today. After graduating from college, I felt lost and didn’t know what I wanted to do. I worked at a music company for a year in New York and eventually made my way back to LA. I worked at a trailer company for 4 years and made the decision to purse composing full time in November of 2021. Thanks to working at that trailer company, I realized that what I wanted to do was to compose. I’m going on 2 years composing full time and it’s been very rewarding.

Denisse, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a composer for media which includes writing for trailers, ads, music libraries, and film. I’ve always had a love for film music and I knew that I wanted to go to school for that. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2016 with a dual degree in Film Scoring and Bass Performance. I work with a number of clients for all sorts of projects. This past year I had the opportunity to score my first feature which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. I love writing for films and hope to work on more shorts/features in the coming years.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I went freelance in 2021 after 4 years of working in music supervision. It was a big risk starting over as a composer but it’s been very rewarding and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I’m going on 2 years of doing music full time and i’ve never been happier.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder when I was in college. It was really tough dealing with my diagnosis while I was in school so I really struggled. There’s so much stigma behind the disorder that I felt like I couldn’t tell anyone about it. It’s been a journey and after years of different psychiatrists and therapists, I feel like i’m finally on the other side of things.
