We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Denisha Atkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Denisha, thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
In my journey as an author, teacher, mother, wife, and so many other titles, I hope to build a legacy that first brings Glory to God, and secondly brings about a change not just in my life but in the lives of the many people connected to my future. I want to be a person who people will look back on and say Denisha Atkins pushed me to see who I am really in God. Denisha helped me to birth the gifts and visions God placed inside of me. I want to be a person who is remembered by how I inspired and sparked growth and change in people all over the world. Most importantly I want to be remembered as someone who helped others to know and love Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Without God we can do nothing but with Christ all things are possible. Overall, I want to be the type of person who will leave behind a legacy that will live on through generations to come.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Denisha A Atkins. I’m a loving wife, caring mother, teacher by nature, and author by calling. I’ve been purposed to do many things but my main purpose is to point others to their right position in the kingdom of God. I write children’s books and I also write inspirational books for adults. The gift that I desire others to receive from reading my books is the gift of knowledge and wisdom. I want to impart positive seeds into not only the youth but adults as well. Some of the key messages in my books revolve around pulling strength from God in our many trials in life. Loving one another as we love ourselves and instilling respect, honor, loyalty, honesty, and God into the those who hold the future. By allowing God to speak through my writing I believe that the next generation of people will be imparted with a foundation and a vision that will push them into their destiny and cause them to become successful, productive, entrepreneurs, writers, dancers, singers, lawyers, scientists, and so much more. We all have a purpose and we all need a helping hand on the way to where God is calling us. I believe God has placed me in a school setting and in the genre of Children’s books in order to help steer the youth in the right direction.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As a creative I have delved into several different niches. I have the ability to create pretty much anything I put my mind to. I’ve made t-shirts, bracelets, and necklaces, and I even started painting canvases. In the midst of doing all of these things I was writing. Last year in 2023 I published my first book entitled “Finding Yourself: Your Downfall is not Your Destiny”. What caused me to be resilient in my creativity was first finding the niche that connected me to my destiny. Although I had the ability to create all of these other things, my passion lied in writing. My purpose aligned with being able to evangelize and tell my story in order to help someone who may be experiencing some of the same things I’ve experienced. Even in writing children’s books I find inspiration in different situations in my life whether it be from people I’m surround by or my own personal life situations. I turn them into stories and life lessons that help and encourage others along their journey. When you know that you know that you’re walking in your calling and many people are connected to your yes, you have no choice but to be resilient and relentless.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The main lesson I had to unlearn was that business comes with making a lot of money. While this is partly true it’s not always true when you’re first starting out. It takes passion and knowing your why whenever you start any kind of business, even when starting a church or whatever God has called you to do. We think about how much money we can make because we know what we bring to the table but we don’t do our research. We don’t really know who our target audience is. Sometimes we don’t really know why we step into a certain field we just want to get our feet wet and try something new because we’re tired of being broke. That was me. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. I knew I was good at a lot of things but I didn’t really have a vision in place. Without a plan and a purpose I was destined to fail. I had to come to a realization that business wasn’t all about money. It’s part of it but the main thing you need in order to have a successful business is a vision, a passion, and a plan! With the leading of God all of those are possible.
